no col in id required?

Is this something new?> ???

I was listening to the streaming audio of 94.7 CIWV, and noticed that their hourly (legal) ID never mentions where they are. All they're saying is, (paraphrasing) CIWV, Ontario's Smoothest Groove at 94.7FM No mention of Hamilton, Toronto, Niagara or such.

Does the CRTC not require city of license in the ID's? Perhaps they just leave it as "your choice" to the broadcasters? Maybe since 94.7 isn't in the BIG City, they see themselves as more of a regional station. Whereby those in Toronto or Montreal would proudly ID themselves where they serve.

Maybe this topic has been raised before, but as I've been hearing 94.7 off/on for the past few years, I thought I'd remembered them giving their COL back when.

I'm not in Canada, but I thought I read somewhere (maybe a letter I once got) that they only have to ID once a day.

Surely someone will clarify.

I do know for certain that the CRTC is not as strict on IDs as the FCC is in the US -- the only Canadian station that I know that IDs on the hour is CFTR in Toronto. I think the late CINW in Montreal also ID'd themselves hourly back when they were a news station.

The Federal Broadcast Act (revised in 1996 and still in effect today) does require Canadian radio stations to give out legal ID's once an hour. Here's the section outlining the regulations:
http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/smt-gst.nsf/eng/sf01225.html

While most Canadian stations bide by the rules when it comes to giving out call letters, a lot give out a questionable principal city or community served. I guess the whole province of Ontario is interpreted as a "community" through CIWV's eyes.

Obviously TV stations have become exempt to the rules, although I have never seen any documents indicating that has occurred.

That's interesting that the only station ID'ing in Toronto is CFTR. Out here on the west coast every station (with the exception of CBC radio) faithfully give out legal ID's once per hour. In fact CFUN is required to ID twice per hour as they got into hot water over the definition of their primary coverage area a few years back (when they were CKCL).

I guess the amount of enforcement depends on who is running each Industry Canada field office across the country or something.

In Southwestern Ontario most of the stations ID more than once an hour now. FM96 in London mentions "CFPL-FM London" multiple times per hour. Co-owned AM980 mentions "CFPL London" at the top of the hour. Only CBC continues to not ID, although they do state COL on some stations with the frequency. Some CBC transmitters act as a group and only one transmitter in the group is named in an ID; this is the case with the transmitters in the Georgian Bay region.

Some stations do not use their city of license - CFHK St. Thomas always IDs as London, and CKOT Tillsonburg never states their COL, instead referring to Southwestern Ontario. 106.9 The X at Fanshawe College always mentions CIXX-FM at the top of the hour, but never mentions London.

TV is not officially exempt from the rules. They just choose not to follow the rules.

I heard the reason why CBC cannot legal give their ID's top of the hour is because the CB call letters are assign to Chile and CBC only allowed to say their call letters once per day. I know Radio-Canada station in Toronto CJBC say their legal id CEE- JAI - B - CEE Toronto (en francais) top of the hour.

I don't think they even use the call letters once a day. The morning sign-on on the Ontario Regional network only mentions cities and frequencies, no call letters.

The French stations seem more likely to promote call letters, whether they have a CB- callsign or not. CBEF in Windsor, for instance, is well-known as CBEF, and even is advertised as such in front of the CBC building in Windsor.
