No Columbus Radio Affiliate for the Indians in 2011?

I have noticed that the Indians are no longer airing on AM 1460...at least for this early part of the season...does anyone know if this is permanent? Do the "Lake Erie Warriors" no longer have a radio home this season in CBus?

Just reached out to Skip Mosic of WBNS Radio via twitter....says they are NOT an affiliate "as of this moment. Stay tuned."

Gotta make room for all those important Ohio State baseball games somehow right? Wow. Wonder how this got screwed up? I'm no Indians fan but it's pretty much inexcusable for them to not have an affiliate in this market.

BNS has been jerking them around for years, preempting them for the Jim Tressel Show, Blow Jackets, Nascar and now OSU baseball. Turns out they were only going to air about half the games, and the Tribe finally told them to go take a flying f@#%.

Good take. I do find it funny that the Reds have never had that problem in this market, but then again the Reds grab the more powerful signals in most areas and leave the crumbs for the Indians, who don't have a real powerful affiliate beyond about Wooster. Either that's poor marketing, this truly being Reds country or a combination therein.

I suppose Dave S. has been sitting in all the meetings to come to his conclusion.

I don't think you need to be an insider to figure that one out. I like a lot of what the Fan does, but seriously ... OSU baseball more important than the Indians? I don't know anybody who'd buy that. Hell, 820 has a better signal than 1460 and carried those games for years. There are just too many eggs in one basket at WBNS and someone had to go. That it was one of the local MLB franchises is unfortunate, but probably not too surprising.
CC has the Indians radio rights ... they could put the Indians on 1230 and move the Reds back to 610.

Since you're obviously connected with BNS, you know I'm right. Unless, of course, you aren't far enough up the food chain to be in the loop.

It appears WBNS-AM will remain all Sports, at least as long as WBNS-FM is all Sports. Some have speculated WOSU-AM may change formats over
the last couple of years.

Not a Basketball fan but also noticed WBNS-AM has preempted quite a few Cleveland Cavs games for OSU sports during the last two months.
Is there a chance WBNS-AM will also cease to be an Cleveland Cavs affiliate in the near future?

As far as WOSU-FM and WOSU-AM being so committed to OSU sports, isn't this part of their mission and/or business model? When they(WBNS-FM) went on the air, we thought they were going to bleed bleed Scarlet and Grey and it appears they are. So, this development is not so surprising. ;)

No one is forcing me to listen; to me the NBA is dead air time, so I do not bother with it. I would prefer something else instead, even if it is simply ESPN programming. When their talk turns to hockey or the NBA I tune it out and go elsewhere.

I figured at least just for this season they'd just air games on WMNI when the Clippers weren't playing and then may be put the games that conflict on 103.9? I know it's not ideal, but it's something.
Baseball and standards, sounds about like the same target audience to me!

As long as WBNS AM/FM is the flagship for Ohio State, both stations will remain all-sports. That's pretty much an iron-clad guarantee. IIRC, doesn't tOSU have a VERY long-term affiliation deal with Dispatch?

IIRC, the Columbus market had been down this road before - a few years back, WMNI (or was it 1230?) quietly dropped the Indians before the season started, leaving WBNS to sign up to carry 'select' games at the season's midpoint.

I would have no idea if WBNS-AM drops the Cavs next season - the team's in too much upheaval as it is, even without longtime PBP voice Joe Tait's recent retirement. They very well could. Of course, there's also the possibility that the entire NBA will shut down all of next season due to an upcoming lockout, making that whole scenario a moot point until 2012.
