It looks like First Broadcasting, owner of the CP for 104.5 Mhz won't be able to get to Cougar Mountain after all. The reason is that the CRTC just released 16 new applications for 104.1 Mhz, serving the Vancouver and Vancouver Island areas. You might remember that the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) had recently filed for 104.1 in Nanaimo, BC for a repeater station coming from their operation in Victoria. In the KMCQ scheme, FM station KAFE, Bellingham would have to change frequencies from 104.3 to 104.1 to facillitate KMCQ getting a full market signal from Cougar Mountain. The 16 applications for 104.1 include the CBC, privately-held broadcasting companies, and a few individuals. Even though the CRTC does not specify 104.1, our research indicates that 104.1 Mhz is the only full-power frequency available for Vancouver, and that would be a Class C FM. In an ironic swift kick to SAGA, owner of KAFE, the KAFE 104.3 signal will be degraded signficantly by the introduction of a new 104.1, on Canadian soil. KAFE gets a significant portion of their revenue from Canadian businesses.

I think station managers in this market can breathe a little easier knowing that the KMCQ transmitter site will remain East of Enumclaw.
