no coverage of Zimmerman verdict? WTF?

KFYI loses any remaining credibility as FOUR talkers (Gilberg & her "Terri's Talkers" gang) all ignore the breaking news during their show.

KTAR...well, they have already established breaking news doesn't break after 7 & on the weekends. So, predictably, the Zimmerman verdict will be their "#1 Thing You Need To Know" - on Monday. Um, no, that won't be the "#1 Thing We Need To Know" on Monday. Saturday, when it broke, yeah, and maybe Sunday, but, no, if you still "need to know" that on Monday... ::)

Would it really have been that difficult to flip over to an ABC News feed for even a half hour, or are those Ramsey contracts too prohibitive for that?

To say these two stations continue to lower the bar is an understatement.

Thankfully, we've still got KJZZ.

I was surprised at KFYI as well. I turned to Terry Gilberg's show because I knew she would be the only live host on the air and got no news about Zimmerman until the breaks.

What is the over/under on Barely Young showing up to do his show tomorrow, after all, he worked the whole week last week...

Good question as we haven't heard the other Barry (Markson) in a while. Last time TNBO was out, Jim Sharpe pulled a five hour shift. YIKES! (there's a 100% chance Michelle will be there to agree with everything the host says)

As far as the topic goes, yawn. The Nurse and I wonder if there was anyone in the newsroom after 7pm Saturday night? You'd think the news director would have called the station to at least let the board op know there was a breaking story.

They were literally JUST talking about Zimmerman on KTAR. On a SUNDAYOHMYGOD

Silly wabbit, the news broke Saturday evening - not Sunday. On Saturday, when KTAR was on Ramsey time and when KFYI had Gilberg talking about Dennis Rodman. Jay did talk about it for a whopping 5-10 minutes on one segment (wow impressive), though again - a "breaking news" station trying to to sensationalize a now-stale story just doesn't cut it. Both station blew it. Admirable attempt to belittle the merits of my observation, however. :)

Maybe they were all too busy watching it on HLN, CNN, Fox News, CNBC, MSNBC and maybe a local station or two. Possibly they were so hypnotised by Nancy Grace that they forget they were in the news business too. Oh well, it's only Saturday night...who listens to the radio on Saturday night?

I turned to KFYI and KTAR Saturday and didn't hear about the Zimmerman verdict.

Unfortunately, I didn't check the other Phoenix News Talk stations.

Shame on you KFYI and KTAR.

Like KKNT or KFNX?

C'mon, this trial had no local connection (sorry, Jarrett Maupin) or the same interest as Jodi Arias' trial. We didn't even have to endure Nancy disGrace broadcasting from the Estrella jail.

Good Doctor,

I agree that the Zimmerman trial did not have a local connection but it's a major news story and the case has the nation talking. News and Talk. hmmm...

Comparing it to the Arias trial? A young, light-skinned (white?) woman being charged with the gruesome murder of her (former) boyfriend, add in sex and religion and there's a slam-dunk for the media to jump on.

I was actually thinking of the white chick who killed her kid (forgot the name, also in Florida, was also acquitted) - that's all KTAR talked about literally for days on end, despite having no local connection. The moral of the story: Unless you can sex up the story, and it's difficult to sex up a story about a creepy-a cracker and black kid in a hoodie, it ain't going to qualify as "breaking news." Zimmerman verdict was/is a huge fail for talkers (both AM & FM) in this market.

The city where I live:

FM All News - ran wall to wall ABC coverage
AM Fox News - Coast to Coast
FM NPR - BBC World Service talking Royal Baby
Pacifica - Regular programming (Soular Grooves)

So the all-news FM nailed it. Reality: the chances of anyone listening to hours of navel gazing of this case at 10:00 on a Saturday night were slim to none and they won't get a bump. There's only so much Live Team Coverage one can endure.

People out and about on the weekend might have liked some radio coverage. Barry Marxium is probably too left for the KFWHYEYE line up. Maybe there can be only one Barry on the station so as not to hurt Barry #1s feelings or damage his ego.

Not only talking, but some parts of the nation destroying stuff and stealing tv's and things as well. ;)

I also notice that the typical talk radio haters of this board tend to be the ones who religiously listen to talk radio the most. I've been holding back from saying this for a few years but I think it's very ironic. Seems like the talk radio haters listen almost 24/7, 365, and notice even more things than I do.

I'm not even thinking of talk radio on a Saturday night, and while many people were sitting somewhere thinking racist thoughts, I was out holding a hispanic and caucasion girl in my arms. :)

Yeah, it seems everyone (except for me) listens to the NBO, so I have no idea what he says or who this Michelle chick is. OTOH, I have pretty much reached my threshold point with KTAR - no longer Keep Talking Arizona Republic, more like Kari Talks All-Freakin'-Day Radio. Memo to Bonneville: Stop trying to make Kari the new Pat McMahon for your 'bro' demos - it's not going to happen. I can only hope someone at Hubbard is looking back to CBS's post-Leykis FM talk fiasco a few years back and saying to themselves, "It would be more of an apples-to-apples comparison now."
