No "Dr. Phil" In Houston

From what I've just found out; KPRC WILL drop "Dr. Phil" after this Friday's show for "Dr. Oz", which will makes it's debut Next Monday. Dr. Phil has been on Local 2 since the show debuted in 2002. So therefore, I hope KHOU (11) or KTRK(13) would step out and pick it up. Apparently, Channel 2 has its plates full with a 4-Hour "Today Show", With "Local 2 News", "Ellen", "Days", and "Rachel Ray" rounding up its daytime; and KHOU has "Great Day", "TPIR", "Y&R", "B&B", "As The World Turns", and The departing "Guiding Light" on their schedule. I hate to see a good show like "Dr. Phil" go down to waste-Right Here on Houston TV. Another Possibility would be FOX 26.

Ratings for Dr. Phil are down significantly nationally ... yet it's still one of the most expensive shows in syndication. Unless CBS decides to lower the fee, it prolly won't be picked up by anyone. As you pointed out, 26 is pretty much the only serious contender at this point. (Fox-owned stations across the country signed on for Dr. Oz, but KPRC won out in Houston.) If they get desperate, they could fire sale it to 51 or 55. I recall uber-popular Judge Judy spent some time way, way down the dial before landing on KRIV.

One reason you're seeing so many stations add local newscasts these days is that syndicated programming like Dr. Phil is waaaay too expensive. I read somewhere that Dr. Phil's show gets $3 million a week in rights fees from stations. Just a guess, but that probably means $25-30,000 a week for KPRC.

I don't think Dr. Phil will be a good fit to Channels 51 or 55, But Maybe to KIAH 39(CW). Channel 51 was a great station worth watching, but apparently it airs mostly Infomercials; 55, however has just added "Deal or No Deal" to their lineup as KTBU just bought the game show up from My20(KTXH).

I think right now, "Dr. Phil" has lately pretty much become like "Jerry Springer's Show"-without the fights, punches, brawls, and chair throwing. I was wondering if I could watch his show online on his website over at DrPhil.Com?

Ch. 51 or 55 may have no other choice but to pick up Dr. Phil if no other station in Houston won't pick it up.

For those of you who like Phil, get CBS (his syndicator) to either a.) drop the ridiculously high syndication fees or b.) make some changes to boost the ratings. Until then, he's not going to be back on Houston TV.

It could be moved a lot of places, but it won't appear anywhere. KPRC is paying the licensing fee for Dr. Phil as required in their contract, but they are not running it because the ratings are so bad. Dr. Oz is doing much better for them and does not cost nearly as much to run.
If Dr. Phil's syndicator wants to nix the deal with KPRC, I'm sure KPRC would be happy to let it go. The reason that won't happen is that no other station will pay the ridiculous amount of money Dr. Phil's syndicator gets from KPRC.
