No engineers =no volume on KYW?

I was listening to KYW this morning and noticed one of the reports' volume was very low and gradually was increased as the guy read the news. I think it was the business stock report or whatever its called by the guy from Sovreign bank?

Anyway is this because they have no engineers and some of the reporters don't remember to turn their mic up now before they talk?..

Sounded like small market to me.. I never heard that on KYW before.

Actually, it's a big-market sound, at least for Infinity's stations. The same exact thing happens on 101.1 CBS-FM in NYC; some of their microphones are set at a much lower level than others. When someone using one of these mikes is talking with another person using a "hot" mike, the audio processor can't react quickly enough, and as a result you hear one person sounding much louder than the other.

Been that way for a looooong time. It's as if the board op doesn't want to start too hot (although sometimes they do.) When that happens, then the first word or two is o.k., but they turn it down too far too fast and the processing has to bering it back up. While an all live format requires a lot of attention, some things (such as traffic, business, etc.) should have the pot start at a standard position, so only small adjustments are required..

Last evening, at least one of the carts they were using (carts??) sounded
like it was overmodulated when it was recorded. Either that, or they're using
a new audio processor that makes some voices sound very harsh.
