No excuse for dead air.

Listening to the launch of ESPN Seattle between 6:45 and 7:45 this morning and can't believe the horrible job they are doing presenting the product. Big chunks of dead air in the stop sets as they try to get the timing down. Poor filler spots and no good promos for their product. Their stunting sounded better than their on-air presentation. You truly do get just one chance to make a first impression and this should be tight, sharp and on target from the first day. The message they are sending to me is "we just don't care that much about the syndicated stuff or how we present it, listen to the M's and Seahawks" Another wasted opportunity.

Re: No excuse for bad execution!

If this were a hastily-decided format change I could see having dead air issues and poor promos. But this format change was MONTHS in the making. There's no excuse for not doing a "dry run" of the syndicated stuff before going "live" and no reason why GOOD promos weren't produced in time for the flip.

On another note - I have to give KOMO credit for at least trying to seize the opportunity to pick up disenfranchised KIRO-AM listeners by airing "welcome home" promos voiced by Bill Yeend and positioning themselves as the go-to source for breaking news and traffic.

FWIW...there was big outcry when 1090 launched their first week about dead air, not buttoned up, etc. I agree we shouldn't hear it in this market...but have to assume it WILL be buttoned up after folks get comfortable, etc.

Could KOMO come out of this on top?

Time will tell......

It's not rocket science. There is a clock, with optional and mandatory breaks and the lengths. If we can make it work in a small rural market with a nominal staff, why wouldn't a major market radio station be able to do it?

Good question. For some reason it happens in large markets more often than you'd think.

I have a file in my pt 15 AM playlist called "11 seconds of Dead Air" which runs 3-4 times in the 150 hr cycle.
I feel it is very important and when I give the deck a shuffle I always wonder where they'll come up.
That's my excuse and I'm sticking with it.

"11 Seconds Of Dead Air" ???
Sounds like a Radiohead song! ;D With pretty good airplay/rotation it should come up in someone's 'SPIN' report! heeeeeheeeee

Have a GREAT DAY!
