No fans of Paul and Al

It's always refreshing to hear opinions about Rhode Island radio from regular every day people who don't work in the business. I just came across a bunch of people talking about Paul and Al. I refuse to post on the topic. I didn't want to sway or influence the conversation one way or another. So I've just decided to watch the Fireworks and not participate. Click the following link and let's see what some random people think of Paul and Al.

And if they change they're screwed so they have to keep crankin'out the same old-same old. They and Charles will be there until CC decides they want a younger audience on HJY. Then they'll suffer the same fate as some B101 local institutions did.

Paul and Al, as well as Geoff Charles, are some of the last vestiges of personality-driven FM radio in the Providence market. I disagree with most of you regarding Paul and Al. They are running the same show they did ten years ago: funny, good-paced, creative, good bits, and good chemistry between the hosts and "Jim Shorts." Charles also remains entertaining, wacky, and a good listen. Jenn and Battle both have great voices; it is too bad that the Powers That Be do not allow either to inject much personality into their shows.

I personally like Geoff Charles. In my opinion he should of been paired up with a female co-host and moved to mornings many moons ago. I think that would have been a kick ass morning show. As far as paul and Al go, I am not sure what is so creative about them. I see a lot of people complain about their lack of creativity. So far only two other people besides myself have posted in this thread and the both of you have even mentioned how Paul and Al been have doing the same old thing for 10 years. I don't understand how that is considered creative. I swear to GOD that expectations in this state are so low now that people just settle for a pile of crap and somehow convince themselves that it is good crap.

Oh well.... enjoy yourselves. Have a Happy 4th of July everyone!

I agree that expectations for RI radio are low. However; I differ on opinion regarding this show. Paul is very talented and Kevin brings a lot of funny bits & smooth production to the table. I remember back in the early 2000's they had no sounders and were basing most of the show around Jen Clark's news. Jim Shorts is on the show more now; and that is a good thing even if they have cut his sports updates back to once an hour. I will say that Al's bits are terrible and there is nothing worse than Al impersonating a RI local celebrity because it sounds like Al trying to not be Al. Doug Palmieri should have gotten a crack at mornings as he, Kevin, and Jen were pretty damn good as fill ins.
I find the Stern link very uncredible as most of the people posting on that board seem like real knuckleheads. I have never been a big fan of Stern and don't consider being raunchy as being a real originator in radio. I have more respect for shows like Matty, G & K, Depetro, Yorke, etc that can put together a good show without being R rated.

You are right. Most people on the Stern Board are knuckleheads. Even Howard hates that board. He has complained about it many times. Unfortunately those people are a reflection of our society. We live in a world of knuckleheads. Many of those knuckleheads listen to the radio. So they still have to be credited. Arbitron doesn't discriminate against knuckleheads. THEY STILL COUNT IN THE RATINGS.

Regarding the raunchy aspect of Stern.....that is only one tiny part of who he is. Many people who don't like Stern don't even listen to him. They just go by what they have heard through the grapevine. That is not a very accurate way to judge a show. You really need to listen for at least a month to judge any program. If you did, you would realize that Stern is actually very clever. So is Matty. You would probably be surprised to know that I actually don't even like most R-rated comedians. Non stop swearing is just a turn off and I don't find it terribly funny. Swearing just for the sake of swearing is not comedy. At least not to me. Jerry Seinfeld is the cleanest comedian around and I find him hilarious! If you are going to swear though, at least know how to do it in a funny way. Then it's OK.

Getting back to local radio.... I don't think doing the same bad Rhode Island impressions for 10 years is creative, nor is it funny. It's old and tiresome. If people are satisfied with it, I guess that is all that counts. I just think more people would be satisfied by something new once in a while. But... whatever. This stuff doesn't effect me much anyway. 9 out of 10 days I'm tuned into the Satellite.

Like them or not Paul & Al are the Salty & Larry of Rhode Island radio.Until CC decides they want to go for cheaper morning
talent. I liked when Doug Palmieri filled in. I actually prefer him at night. I didn't like when CC dropped him for Quinn & Cantera. But I'm glad he is back.
