No HD radios at Best Buy...

I went into Best Buy yesterday to kill some time. I checked their boom boxes and home stereo section for a Receptor or Yamaha. No HD radios there! Next I went I spoke to a guy in the car stereo section actually knew what it was, but said he didn't carry any. He did steer me to the Kenwoods that were "HD Ready" (read: $200 add-on needed) but he didn't stock the adapters. I carefully checked over the JVC car stereo line and none of those were HD.

So forget about Christmas 2006 for HD... :D

What a shame ! :D I had the same experience at Best Buy - not one HD radio, table-top or in-dash ! But, there are real nice displays for Satellite Radio and Cingular and Sprint ! A search of CC's web site for the Receptor HD, returns "not available", for Metro Wash., D.C. (Maryland) ! Also, I noticed that Amazon/iBiquity is no longer offering the Receptor HD at a discount (didn't make any difference in the sales rankings :D), but offering a $25 - $50 MAIL-IN rebate, as if anyone is going to go to that much trouble (plus, mail-in rebates are a pain, not guaranteed, and I always avoid them).

I've said this before and I'll say it again: If you expect to sell consumer electronics of any sort these days, you have to get the gadgets into the big-box retailers, and if they won't stock it (i.e., no demand), you can fuggetaboudit. Everyone I know in the radio business who has tried to purchase an HD Radio at a big-box store has been steered over to either HDTV ("there's no such thing as HD Radio") or satellite radio...so, not only is there no stock of the product, but the sales people don't even know what it is.

Not a good sign.

Check the fine print, or in this case the logo. There is no mention of HD on the sale points but if you look at the receiver an "HD ready" logo in the corner. You won't find an HD adapter in the store or the website, last I looked. The very same receivers, proudly proclaimed by the sales points, play mp3 files, interface with iPods, and are satellite ready.

I'm not worried. The National Association of Broadcasters have a plan!

1) Adopt digital radio standard.
2) ????????????????
3) Profit!
