No Jack in NE Ohio...but now in NYC/Chicago

There were rumors recently we'd get a Jack-FM format in northeastern Ohio. It hasn't happened yet.

But...this afternoon CBS/Infinity/Viacom oldies stations WCBS-FM (New York) and WJMK (Chicago) changed formats to Jack-FM. Both stations are legendary oldies stations that were thought to be very successful financially. These moves are pretty significant...as more older-demo'd format dominos begin to fall.

Thought the changes there would be of interest to those who hadn't yet heard.

Can't believe Mix and Q are staying the course and neither has given this a shot yet...ESPECIALLY Q with how geeked out Infinity is for this format.

Holy (bleep), Infinity's flipped the Oldies Mothership to JACK FM!

Wow. If they'll flip legendary WCBS-FM to the format (along with their big FM oldies outlet in Chicago), they'll flip ANYTHING to it.

The AllAccess item on this notes both WCBS and WJMK have moved their oldies formats to the Internet, though presumably without the same big name personalities.

If Infinity owned WMJI, it'd be JACK FM yesterday. This isn't dipping your toes into a format, this is diving in with a cannonball. Flipping your two highest profile oldies stations is like taking a billboard out saying "INFINITY IS DUMPING OLDIES!".

Re: Q104 - aside from not knowing how they are doing ratings/revenue wise...has Infinity flipped any Hot ACs to JACK FM? Aside from NYC and Chicago...in Los Angeles they flipped the "ARROW" station (rock oldies) and in Buffalo, the FM Talk station. Does Infinity see room for JACK FM to go after WMJI and Mix?

Re: Infinity Gulps the JACK FM Kool Aid

Flipping CBS-FM to "Jack" is the radio equivalent of "New Coke." Let's see... they have another signal at 102.7 that hasn't cracked a 2-share since Regan was president... if they want to do this knee-jerk format they should have done it there instead of blowing up a 30+ year institution.

Since Infinity is obviously in "lemming" mode with this Jack thing (didn't anyone learn anything from "Jammin' Oldies" or Disco???)I'd bet on Infinity flipping somethig to Jack soon... but based on what happened in New York... they may be stupid enough to blow up WDOK or WNCX instead.... unless Clear Channel beats them to the punch. (How about taikng the Buzzard off the ventilator and feeding tube. (Kid) Leo FM, anyone?)

Figures....I'm in Chicago for two days this week and manage to get on a plane at the same time of a format flip, and miss it. I should have my Radio Geek Card revoked.

Re: Infinity Gulps the JACK FM Kool Aid

I read on the Chicago board that WJMK may also put the oldies on an HD channel, much like WUSN's second channel. I said on the Cincy board that I thought WGRR's future might be measured in mere hours.

I'd put my money on WNCX. Their money maker on the station is Howard Stern, who will be gone soon anyway. There's rumors floating around about moving Xtreme to the stronger signal since Rover's on there, so maybe that will be part of the whole project for them. I'd put money on that before they touched Q or 'DOK.

Makes sense..... but then again, blowing up one of the strongest brands in FM radio doesn't. Infinity had a weaker sister in WNEW... and a quickly changing situation at Krock... if they wanted to launch a "Jack."

Re: Infinity Gulps the JACK FM Kool Aid

If you read the ''Variety Hits'' board elsewhere on Radio Info, there are people who think ''JACK'' will save FM radio, cure cancer, feed the starving and on and on and on..

Didn't we hear from the same people when all 80s and Jammin Oldies were the rage for about, oh, one ratings period..

Somebody at the switch for Infinity has to be in full out panic mode..

Oh, I was curious how the move is going over at the New York Radio Message Board, whose members take apart WCBS' every sneeze...and sure enough, "Radio Dentist" board admin Allan Sniffen and his regulars are in full-blown "WHOOP! WHOOP! ALERT!!" mode...

They even have a board dedicated to the switch:

I Believe Infinity is putting the Oldies format on Internet Stream Channels like they did with the Alterantive Format of K-Rock in NYC

There Using WNEW as a Flanker to Try to pull off Numbers from Clear Channel's KTU Dance Station. and As is With the people who listens to Oldies pushing past the undeisrable advertising range of 55+. Oldies is gonna die on Major City Grade Stations. WHo will Go Next KRTH LA, WOGL Philly since those are 2 and 4 markets

Someone sent me a TXT msg on my cell phone with the info. I thought it was just someone messing with me!! R.I.P. WCBS-FM.

This radio geek needs help... the jammin' oldies fad has been talked about alongside of JACK, as if maybe JACK is just the next fad format. I know Jammin' 92.3 was the station that was the jammin' oldies victim here in Northeast Ohio. But does anyone remember what station in New York City was blown up for jammin' oldies?? I'm having a hard time remembering that.

Thank you my fellow radio geeks! :)
Edited by Jake_Reynolds on 06/05/05 02:05 PM.

105.1
It was Hot AC. I am not sure if it was Mix 105, or Big 105. Didn't they call themselves Big 105 for awhile?
Anyway, the calls were WTJM.
It is now hip-hop, Power 105.1

Rumors from WHO???!!! Anyone CREDIBLE??!!

Didn't think so.

I'm sure Jack will last just about as long as Young Country, Jammin' Oldies, Disco, and all those other forgettable two-book wonders.

I think it was "Big 105" by the time it then flipped to Jammin' Oldies as WTJM.

My good online bud "Famous Amos" did nights in the format, and is currently involved with the "Jammin' Oldies 2.0" format being webcast by the same folks who do the original "JACK FM" online. (See how everything comes around?)

"Amos", Anita Bonita and others are involved in that group, BuzzNet Media.
