No jingles on Hot AC radio?

Been hearing some talk lately...the latest consultant spin is that Hot AC stations should not use jingles. Can anybody see any reasons to substantiate this idea? What about your individual stations, do you go with jingles or leave them out and why?

We just started using jingles when we re-imaged. We have the KIIS-FM Mainstream package from ReelWorld. As a radio nerd, I think it makes the station sound sharper when done right. (When done wrong, I cringe). To the listener? I really don't know if they make a difference or not.

To the listener, I think they do make a difference, but I'm sure the listener doesn't realize it. Quick shotgun jingles are great to keep the flow and the energy going. Or you can use the transitions to go from something fast to slow, etc.

I agree, package has to sound HOT though. Much like the KIIS package. What does Mix 98.5 in Boston use? They have great jingles for a Hot AC!

Here in the NYC metro, our powerhouse Hot AC WPLJ plays a great TOH jingle. To my ears, a jingle on a heritage station, like PLJ which has been in the Hot AC/CHR Pop mainstream format for 25 years tomorrow, (6/30) it is a great branding statement. Other then the TOH, I don't hear any other memorable jingles, if any on PLJ. To the average listener, I would guess that it is not a priority. If one adds up all of the seconds spent on jingles over the course of a day, and it added up to 4-8 minutes, would listeners rather hear an extra hit or two, as opposed to a singing logo? Us radio professionals/fans/geeks love them-but if radio was targeting us, it would have a .005 share.

I think that jingles keep it sharp. COX radio programs Hot AC without them like on WMXB in Richmond. I think it sounds dull without them

Jingles help keep the brand in mind to the listener subconsciously...they just might help a diaryholder recall what they were listening to.  And radio geeks (I am one) like them! ;D

I agree with Insert...Mix/Boston's jingles sound good.  What do they use?
