No Joke: 1370 To 24/7 Comedy

Flip date isn't scheduled, but there's proof that a dozen Clear Channel stations will be dropping their current formats for 24/7 Comedy - one of them being WJIP 1370, currently a simulcast of WKIP 1450.

I wonder if one of the soon-to-be-former Anastos stations will go Comedy in Albany? Can't see WOFX 980 going Comedy (unless sports moves to an FM...)

They'd be wise not to stunt with that clip of Ernie advising his weatherman to "keep [expletive] that chicken." :D

Already shifted as of yesterday. Sounds a bit like XM (been a long time since I gave up satellite) Comedy with the disadvantage that you don't know who the comic is (unless Bobcat Goldthwait speaks with a Mexican accent)

Comedy is an Interesting novelty concept. It might be funny for a while, but how do you keep it fresh, and unpredictable. They would need to be really humorous, not just the lowbrow juvenile stuff. I see CC has already flipped WXKS 1200 Boston to all comedy. I would probably try it for a while, especially if I needed a good laugh. I have to wonder why flip an unrated middle of nowhere station like WJIP, they just started to simulcast WKIP (again). It has been a long time since 1370 Ellenville has had a separate broadcast. Perhaps they want to test audience reaction on a ner-do well frequency.

@MHVRadioFan: My guess is perhaps CC wants to reach the Catskills area (which has been said to have a standup comedy circuit) - and even though it's miles away from NYC, this can be their de facto NYC affiliate for 24/7 Comedy...

This is from Radio Insight.com

“Going through the previous domain registrations we can lock down the following....
Comedy1370.com: News/Talk WJIP Ellenville NY which currently simulcasts 1450 WKIP Poughkeepsie.”
This whole report is speculative on their part. In addition, broadcasters have a long history of claiming domains they might use, or to shake things up, by getting the competition thinking, they might flip a station.

You mean to tell me that Clear Channel would put a non-public list of potential future 24/7 Comedy stations on a page on its network website just to mess with us?

No, not on their non-public site. However obviously this has become public, as it often does if a broadcast company actually secures a domain name. I have seen much speculation about such changes at radio stations based domain registrations. WPDH locked up several names to keep WBWZ from using them. In NYC when Merlin flipped WEMP to all news, how many fake domains did he use?

Who knows it might just happen, however it would be better if it was on a station we could hear in the Mid-Hudson Valley. I would like to hear something different. There is speculation about flips to comedy since 1200 in Boston went all comedy. It will be interesting if they have any success
