No more 1540 THE FARM....WYCL

WGFT (1330) and WASN (1500) are off the air with a STA to return to air by early next year. 1330 is listed as a feeder for W32AI 94.3 (moving to 93.7). W32Ai is owned by WGFT/WASN GM Skip. WASN studio is listed as WYSU according to the FCC database.

As for WYCL and WHTX, maybe the owner can come on here and give a update.

WYCL filed for this STA below on October 17, 2013.... BUT is WHTX(1570) also silent at this time?

Exhibit 1
Description: REASON FOR REQUEST

STATION HAS BEEN TAKEN SILENT FOR REPAIRS TO THE TRANSMISSION SYSTEM, DUE TO DIFFICULTY IN KEEPING THE TOWERS IN PHASE.

Hopefully they fixed the audio chain...put in an Optmod or something. Audio was awful a couple weeks ago.

I think it's worse now. It sounds distorted when someone is talking and to top it off all local breaks are not filled it's just dead air! (He's running a satellite format)

From what I understand, they plugged Cumulus' "The Touch" satt format and switched PCs from the Webb Road facility - when no one noticed - to one operated by Phil Cato at a separate location. (Phil is a former LMA operator of WYCL back in 2011 until his checks bounced, and has operated an Internet radio station since then. Moreover, Phil's maintained the FB page for "HOT JAMZ 1570" since May.)

Nelson Cintron has his work cut out for him in a number of ways. Not only is he tasked with trying to bring back a silent signal in WYCL, which was crippled by copper theft and overall negligence, BOTH WYCL and WHTX are stations that epitomize the term "churn and burn."

It doesn't help that both stations are low-powered AM signals on the high end of the dial, one of which is a daytimer, and the other with a signal that avoids key parts of the overall market... even in optimum conditions. They have had no format traction, with WYCL changing formats at a ridiculous rate (eight times since the spring of 2010), and now both have no identity. Even with the market being bereft of any urban format, I find it hard to believe that anyone would want to tune in to an inferior-sounding low-power high-band AM with no local programming or the capacity to air even a legal ID, let alone commercial breaks (which might be a blessing as neither station has been able to sustain itself with any advertising dollars, the lone exception being when it was leased by Jim Davison).

Truthfully, it may be better off for Nelson to operate the stations with as minimal of an effort as possible, take them both silent for good (assuming WYCL ever returns to the air) and sell off all the transmitter land for both stations to developers and frackers. And, sadly, few if anyone would notice. The market's overall population has collapsed so dramatically that there really is a glut of radio stations.

I think something can be done with WHTX not all is lost there. You can make some money on the station but your not going to get rich with it. I think it's the perfect opportunity for someone who has worked in this market before and knows the market well. The only reason why WHTX and WYCL are in the state that they are in is because of the non-stop format wheel spinning every six months or so. Formats take time to gain an audience and advertisers and before either station could accomplish that a new format would be on the air and it has been going on for years! These stations need a stable owner who will invest the time and money in some LOCAL programming.

A quick check of the FCC data base shows Whiplash Radio is still the liscense holder for both stations nothing has been filed to change ownership as of yet even though Nelson Cintron is clearly in charge.

Based on who is "running" things, I think it will be a hard sale to make money as Mr.Cato is not the best when it comes to operating a real radio station as he has a track record of not paying his bill, breaking contracts, and not understanding how a radio station works, WHTX will likely fail. The remote control does not surprise me as I hope they build a real website as the last one looked like a joke and for 1570 to be taken for real they need to have a some form of local content, a real site with streaming, and in my opinion a better brand as hot jamz is a bad rip off of 101.1 and 101.9.

From an advertising stand point, if they can tap into the old WRBP/WASN sales staff (one former staff member was at one point involved) they MIGHT be able to go to their contacts for flights, but the likely hood of them getting a WRBP rate would be a tough sale. As for the music, if they go for the "gold" format, they may be able to find a niche but with the talk of relaunching jamz on 94.3/93.7, and the possible 100.5 clear channel is launching, they may have competition.

If urban doesn't work out on 1570, Cintron is better off having spanish there if 1540 doesn't get on the air.

Not sure how Cato and others will make the AMs a success given the bad luck the stations have had over the years.

A couple of years ago-WHTX 1570 did sound great, with Gary Rhamy in the mornings live(with guest like Tommy James, The Crystals, Gary Puckett and so many more)-Voice Over talent Bill Ward from Cleveland's Fox 8 was doing all the liners and promos, Alan Courtright with Local News, CBS news followed at the top of every hour, Bob Church and Ed Komlos on High School Sports, WHTX Jingles, Charlie Tuna every afternoon, weekend shows like Dick Clarks Rock Roll and Remember, Elvis Only, Sounds of Sinatra, American Standards by the Sea, Pirates Baseball, Scrappers Baseball, weekend brokered music shows and local churches on Sundays and so much more-I miss that programming a lot from when Jim Davison took over-he brought a lot of live and local talent to WHTX airwaves, and it was airing great music and programming for the whole community to enjoy!!!
