No More Ads On Radio Streams, Thanks To Apple...

They've secured a patent for a system that would allow you to dump out of a radio station stream when a commercial break starts and send you to your own iTunes library. It'll monitor the break (i.e. stay connected and the radio stations will still get their impression $$$) and then resume the stream once the break is finished.

Steve Jobs would be proud. Also, finally a way to avoid hearing Flo and those annoying Progressive spots! Bravo, Apple!

Don't count on them doing anything with it. They patent stuff just for the sake of using it so sue someone down the road. They have several patents related to radio already, never used a single one of the technologies.

Or the equally annoying "McGruff the Crime Dog" internet bully PSA with that annoying whiny girl talking about unleashing "Zombie Armies" on her foe, which has been playing way to long now and way too often!

If they actually implement this, what would be the incentive for most commercial stations to stream their audio? As it is, streaming is expensive to to. Not many stations make a dime out of it, many lose money. Take the possibility of selling spots out of the picture, and there is little incentive left. If misused, this could effectively kill broadcasting of terrestrial stations on the Internet.

Be careful what you wish for. What Apple substitutes for those spots might actually be worse than what you get now.

@Scanman: (text vibrate) [robot voice] "Hey..." (text vibrate) "What's up..." (text vibrate) :D

So how could it detect when I have an ad for RadioLoyalty or to win iPods and such in my own voice unless it looks for key words in your metadata like "ad", "advertisement", "break"? What if I were to wait to the end of a song and announce the songs played and then mention RadioLoyalty? It could cause many stations to not want to stream on iTunes. This means that iTunes would be mostly amateur Radio stations.
