No more AM IBOC on 820 WNYC

I did a quick band scan today and noticed that 820 WNYC must have their HD hash generator turned off, because both 810 and 830 kHz are now quiet as a mouse. Not that I particularly care to have two more distant stations upon which to listen to the Drugster (WGY and WEEU), but at least WNYC is no longer casting a nasty hiss upon their own signal.

What possible use would there be for the AM to run HD when their FM-HD3 covers better in all directions ???

It is possible that WNYC AM's HD signal has been permanently switched off. WNYC AM does not appear now in Ibiquity's list of HD stations: http://www.hdradioalliance.com/stat...et&utm_campaign=Station+Guides+on+hdradio.com
If this is the case, it would be the second NYC AM station to turn off HD. WABC shut theirs down quite a while ago. I agree with the previous post that HD on WNYC AM is superfluous, given the rebroadcast on WNYC FM- HD3.
AFAIK, no local stations that did not already broadcast in HD have added it in the past few years.

They finally realize that spending money on AM HD is slightly worse than flushing hundred dollar bills down the toilet.

WABC 770 never had HD at night after the first week, since Citadel realized that it's hurting their own WJR in Detroit.

You can only afford to sound awful for as long as you're willing to sound awful.

There is no way to "subract out" the bits of the data from the overall waveform and not have it
be audibly detrimental to the decoded analog audio.

Then there's the -94% modulation max limit, and the loss of modulation density.

It's now a contest to see who has the least sense in MW radio engineering.

Pretty much a given that that will turn out to be CBS.

WJR and WLS/Chicago also ditched HD for good sometime ago; even WLS is running in AM Stereo again!

While CBS will be the obvious winner in that department, CC will probably give them a real run for their money...

Strangely this morning WSCR 670 and WBBM 780, both CBS here in Chicago were without iboc this AM on the drive home.
I check now 4 hours later and both still clean. I don't think I've ever heard both of 'em clear at once since this all started.

I suspect it's off for good. I think, eventually, IBOC will disappear from the AM band. No one wants it, it doesn't work well and, oh yeah, no one wants it..again. If ANY IBOC format has a snowball's chance it's on FM since you can at least multicast. Still there are the well talked out reception issues and, in this ecconomy, stations really don't want to spend more money on this. There are stations that have taken their IBOC FM signals down for maintainance and not one call comes in to complain. Pretty damning evidence right there.

finding an HD radio to pick up these stations is like finding a needle in a haystack. Most stores don't even carry them. Radios are not that hot anymore. Most of the radios you see today is really a CD player or Ipod dock that just happens to have a radio on it. And most of the radio sections of modern day jam boxes are usually of questionalble quality.

They are readily available @ srores everywhere and cheaply.

670 WSCR Chicago back to Iboc
780- WBBM still iboc down.

Doesn't sound any better than it did before on 670.
Still doesnt decode at all in HD on my wife's Kenwood HD in the Hyundai.
