Some would think this a mystery. Convergent has been in love with this "JAKE" idea since before they bought the place and eventually killed Rock 107-3. Why they would try to move in on K-Bay is beyond me. From what I see, Kbay is in a position no one really wants. Read that as "doesn't rate or sell all that well".
I've heard 1073 killed 92.7 BEFORE the switch, ratings wide.
Knowing the finances of the Convergent people, they clearly need to keep the revenue valve wide open. However, why they would kill such a highly rated station is a mystery. It's not like 102.3 doesn't need an overhaul.
Corpus Christi has always been a tough sales market. If they wanted to launch an AC station, why not do it on 102.3? That "Planet" brand has languished as a turkey since the second or third book, back when it was on 104.5.
To me, this is a classic case of being "TOTALLY" consulted. However as I listen to it, it's pretty similar to "Jake". Maybe it's more a case of Blotting out the "Original" Convergent ownership and branding it with the "New" financiers.
If it were me, I'd have dropped the "Jake" on the sly. Just become 1073 FM. The shift isn't that apparent. Of course everthing needs to be "New".
If I were Malkin, I'd REALLY be worried now. KEYS has been destroyed. And now 92.7 K-Bay is under a full scale assault. If Convergent flipped 102.3 back to "The Beat" Malkin MIGHT be out of business. 102.3 beat Z-95 before. Now 92.7's "Z-95 Lite" is in the crosshairs.
