I know Will will love this: there is a reason why I'm not going to trash any music choices on the Boston stations:

I just turned 50 last Thursday, and (at least according to Arbitron) am now officially among the elderly population! :)
 
It's 55, not 50. So you have 5 more years before you become useless to advertisers. ( a large desirable age group is 18 to 54).
 
Though when I mentioned to Mark at BRW that I was 50 he said that really I was now into the "they don't want you" zone, that it really ends at 49. Whatever, it's for reasons like this that 103.3 dumped 60s-80s pop for the current stuff. (And reminder of course, that their Barry
Scott debuts tomorrow night on WROR which still does play 60s-80s). But yes it's debatable,
50...55; whatever, we still get the pitch to join AARP.
 
Don't 55 year olds spend way more money than 25 year olds?

55 year olds: Houses, cars, motorcycles, vacations, boats, life insurance, vacation homes, riding lawnmowers, anti aging remedies, landscapers, kid's college tuition, new clothes from Nordstom's

25 year olds: apps, nightclubs, tattoos, consignment shops, sunglasses.
 
One thing that's said is we older folks are committed to our brands. Not so with younger folks
who can be won over to a competing brand. Also older folks tend to pay for things up front instead
of putting them on credit cards--which is what they want. Ever-increasing credit card bills. YEAH!

Advertising is, at its core, a cynical business, and nothing could be more cynical than valuing an audience that, in your heart of cold hearts, you believe is young, stupid and gullible. But that's how advertising works, by preying on the weak and convincing them to part with more money than they should on a product that's more sizzle than steak. Gotta love it.

I may be 51 years old, but I'm watching the MTV Video Music Awards! And boy, has it changed since it first started in 1984! And next year, it'll be the 30th. anniversary! I hope they can do something special then!
