No More Sony/ATV Music

It looks like Sony/ATV have caused a bit of a stir since they pulled their music from ASCAP and BMI. Pandora has been forced to pay an increase of 25% this year for the royalties for Sony/ATV songwriters. It also means any internet radio webcaster that does not have a licensing deal in place with Sony/ATV is breaking the law as of Jan 1, 2013. BMI/ASCAP/SESAC royalties are no longer enough. Something to keep in mind. The Sony/ATV catalog is quite large.

So does that mean even if you have a license to play music covered by a streaming licensing service it's still not enough?

I haven't heard that I'm limited as to what I can play through StreamLicensing. I usually get an Email when things change however I'm sure they'll make agreements that will allow us to play those tunes. If now I'll put my station on an offshore server, use VPN to scramble my Internet and possibly change the name to another Progressive Rock sounding name that will attract listeners. Its a bunch of BS I'm paying Royalties so I should be FREE to be the Album Rock station I want to be. I'm sure others feel the same way. I for one am tired of corporate bullies trying to kill what little life is left in Album Rock. These guys know damn well what they are trying to pull by trying all they can to cut UK music off from the USA. Then they replace it with Rap and Top40 and then dumb down "classic Rock" stations to "hits".

Like I said I think this will be solved before Sony runs around suing people (like the RIAA is well known for).

This time us Album Rockers have to fight for the right to Rock and to break others from the shackles of Top 40 and Rap across the globe!

More than just Michael Jackson on Sony Records. I also understand he bought out all the copyrights for The Beatles. Rhapsody, Spotify, Mog and all the other subscription music services have all been waiting to be able to play this sort of stuff legally but due to sheer greed from the industry they can't legally do this (in the greedy country known to the rest of the world as the USA). Politicians have been accepting bribes and listening to lobbyist for years. It the same reason I can't legally watch HBO, Cinemax on my HDTV which I payed good money for due to the interference from the copy protection known as HDCP. These geezers don't know technology from a hole in the ground and as long as Americans are dumbed down and kept out of the loop this sort of things happen. We need to inform our listeners that our musical choice is due to be stripped by dictators right in our own country and the reason they can no longer legally watch HBO, Cinemax in HD was because we are allowing dictators to rule us.

We as broadcasters do have a responsibility to Teach America about the evils of our own communist government before we end up having Hitler all over again some day.

The good news thelegacy is that a lot of people are starting to realize this money-based-on-nothing equals debt which equals profit based on nothing which in itself is just greed on a massive scale...if that makes sense...And that is why people are waking up to this reality in a big way thanks in major part to the internet, a true democratic, at least at present, exchange of ideas and hopefully moving on to a new paradigm of growth. We hope.

The problem with Sony/ATV is that they currently have complete over their content, which is quite extensive. There are no negotiations. You either have to pay what they want or you don't play their content. There are no regulations that currently restrict what they can charge, and they are a notoriously greedy company. I would look for annual increase in what they want until the government steps in.

Looks like we should add another group to the list. Internet radio and all services really, now have to negotiate with Universal Music Publishing as well as Sony/ATV, on top of the BMI/SESAC/ASCAP royalties. They have yet to hit up services, but it is coming.

These groups are going to milk internet radio for all it's worth and then some.

Look I can understand charging a big Internet Radio company like Pandora or bigger Clear Channel, Infinity Broadcasting and many others, but hobbyists like myself who don't really make a dime on Internet Radio. In fact I've almost lost my station many times let alone my house due to my wife getting sick and medical bills rising higher. I even try and get my listeners to listen via RadioLoyalty and tell them that in order to help break them from the shackles of Top40 and Rap we have to pay huge royalties and that we are not a big company. The more RadioLoyalty listeners we get the more money we make to offset the cost. Many businesses do listen to The Legacy but you'd be surprised at the people who won't donate simply by using RadioLoyalty instead of Shoutcast.

I have read an Email that StreamLicensing is working on ways to make it easier for their affiliate broadcasters. We'll only have to see when and if Sony starts demanding us more money.

Somebody simply needs to contact Sony/ATV and request a list of all the music they control. If everybody stops playing their stuff then they're come back with something reasonable. As long as people cave into their extortion you'll never get any of them to play fair.

It's this kind of nonsense that drove me away from netcasting. If I decide to put up anything again it will be with indie artists.

I think with the major government cut backs, folks who were in the military losing their homes due to the government over spending on foolishness such as the RIAA I'm sure they will be one of the next to get cuts as well. Then they will have to start to see the value in Digital broadcasting and the distribution of music. I'm sure the government does not have the staff, time, nor concern about the small netcaster who may accidentally or whatever play a few tunes not listed under Sound Exchange. The stuff the RIAA has been getting away with will soon change because the government is in danger of a shut down and if it means a few tunes get played it will just have to wait till the economy gets better to where our nations defense is not in danger (which right now it is).

I'm not too happy with Soney what with their Rootkits and all which started many computer virus writers to write more vicious malware. I don't think Sony really wants to start making too many waves after that stunt in which many folks have not forgotten.
