No More STREETZ 102.9???

??? Hmmm, as of last night STREETZ 102.9 has been off the air. The online stream is silent too. Just when I thought we finally had a 3rd Urban Hip-Hop choice.

;D Kinda reminds me of the old WILD 96.7 "The Little Station"

Because its a pirate... Either by an individual or a company... Atlanta already has hot 107.9,,, Its one of the best stations ever,, and you have Heritage V, and the Suburban Hip Hop for white boys on The beat if Hot is playing a bad song or commercial... Although, technically if you wanna support Hot,,, listen in on some of their Ads that support the format, cause if they dont sell adds, then they lose the format... No One could hear Streetz anyway.... 95.5 still needs to drop their Hip Hop slogan and start adding some dance music.. The only stations in Atlanta that should Rep Hip Hop are Hot and V.....

Look at Rodney Ho's blog...and at the other two posts on this board. Former Radio One Atlanta exec Steve Hegwood was apparently sued by his former employer for noncompete violations. One Rodney called Hegwood for comment, the station was silenced just minutes later.

The threat of Hegwood losing his personal wealth silenced the station.

This has gotten wild. Rodney could very well have scared Hegwood by coming by. A friend who is plugged in to Radio One said Wayne Brown is "running for the hills." I'm not sure why because a contact at Radio One said Wayne is free to do what he wants. But my friend also said Radio One CEO Alfred Liggins "is running around suing everybody."

All the info found and now publicly known about W275BK indicates that its a legal operation and NOT a pirate. Now, the individuals from Extreme Media running this outlet, they could have some legal issues from a former employer.

Now the Streets1029.com/Streetz1029.com websites are down altogether.

For Hegwood, Brown, et. al, was it worth it to get sued (or the threat of lawsuit) to get shut down this quickly? I mean, if Rodney Ho found out what he did, and everyone from this board (mostly jal, RoddyFreeman, etc) found out stuff too, how did this group reasonably expect to operate without Radio One folks finding out?

Maybe they just should have run some loop of public domain tunes until they could debut "Streetz" without legal action.

It is not a pirate it is a translator but we appreciate you setting us dumb Atlantans straight. What would we do without your insight into this market

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but don't the FCC rules state something to the effect that translators are not allowed to carry original programming like 102.9 was doing with Streetz 102.9. I thought they are only allowed to re-transmit another AM or FM station?

As far as I'm concerned the FCC should NEVER have allowed a translator on 102.9 due to the interference issues it causes to Magic 102.9.

I just wish I was there for WiLD 96.9 or whatever it was back in 2001. Apparently, I just happened to come right after it disappeared. I wonder what that was like?

On an unrelated note, they should at least try ghetto house radio syndication on a station there - other than Q and Star. Actually.... ah..nevermind - no forget about where I live - Atlanta needs it more. I'm already satisfied with what we have on Friday nights, and whatever is going to be happening on Saturdays as well now. Dj Richie Rich or 3 Bad Brothaz need to take over a station on one of the weekend nights there, and then there should be something else going on as well, related to electro bass, dance, breaks, or electro hip hop, on the other weekend night. They should also consider Pocos Pero Locos there too on one of the urbans or rhythmics and start reppin' for that Latin Hip Hop Flava!

I wonder if WHTA even plays Dj Class or Dj Madd during mixshows? I know the BIG station does play one of them... and are they still BIG? Anyway, I should log out and go to sleep because at six o clock at six o clock it's time for.... well, I'll just say I want to be up and rockin' rather early.

The translator should move from V-103's tower. V-103 covers the 102.9 frequency in both Fulton and Dekalb and well into Gwinnett County. Any effort to move the antenna for better reception of Streetz 102.9 leads to better reception of V-103.3 at 102.9. Moving to 101.9 at this tower or working-out a deal to take the 100.9 frequency from Woodstock to the Richland site would provide better reception on all radios. W265BD could move to another frequency with some monetary help and allow Streetz to use the 100.9 frequency at Richland. I would suggest moving to 100.9 at Richland, at 1,060 feet and 250 watts. Third adjacent to Kicks would minimize reception problems, due to spacing and 100.5 WNNX is a weaker signal as a C2.

I don't have any firsthand knowledge, I am just commenting on things as I read them. Apparently, national publications outed Hegwood and company before anyone else did. Obviously, they are not going to rat out their sources. I do find these business catfights interesting. Given all the rumors going on out there, this could be a long and very interesting fight.

And...depending on how the contracts were worded...the public domain tunes could still be a violation of noncompete. The reason the shutdown occured is because a member of the news media asked questions. The news media is the only other thing that scares people more than lawyers.

Trust me, Hegwood will be back in Atlanta with another Urban station. He's just now building his company back up again. Hopefully, he does the right things this time. He wanted Albany back since his HOT 106 station he had there went off the air under his On Top Communications brand. The new POWER 105.5 he has will give 96.3 WJIZ major competition since they are the only Urban in SW Georgia.

100kw class C FM versus a rimshot class A. Competition, yes...but hardly major.

Word on the Streetz that 102.9 will be Atlanta Braves baseball station .

That same frequency was #2 under WJIZ for a long time with the Urban AC format they had. Even Hegwood's former station gave WJIZ some stiff competetion back in the day so..dont count him out. Jammin J knows what it takes to win. Its not the signal its the music you program.

I was listening to the radio the other day and found Braves Baseball on 96.1, 99.3, 102.9 and one other station. I didn't try the AM.

99.3 = WCON Cornelia. 102.9 = WMJE Gainesville "Magic" (Sister to WDUN). You were hearing the game on WMJE, not the translator.

There is no way the Braves would sign with a 270 watt translator. They will be back on WSB-AM soon (basically by default).

Sounds like Majic 102.9 is picking up the Atlanta Braves since WDUN is now the flagship of the Gwinnett Braves. I guess WGGA (another sister to WDUN/WMJE) is too small a signal for the Atlanta Braves, despite being sportstalk. This will be interesting once UGA and Tech football starts up in the fall--WDUN has carried UGA and WGGA has carried Tech. Although, IIRC the I-League season is over by September, so there might be enough signals to cover ATL, UGA, and GT.

WCON has had the (ATL) Braves for a while.

I wouldn't expect the ATL Braves to be back on WSB until their contract with CC runs out, at the soonest. ATL won't want WGST without an FM side, and CC may not be willing to do that.

Isn't one of the CC Latino stations doing the ATL play-by-play en espanol? I remember the La Favorita group did that for a while.

If I was in Northeast GA, I would listen to the Braves on 99.3 WCON. I've listened to the Braves on WCON in a Buckhead parking deck before. It's a great signal. If I had a business in this area and wanted to reach Braves fans, I would spend my ad budget with WCON. I don't see any benefits to the Braves on WMJE. I've long been against too many signals broadcasting the same game/sports event in the same listening area. It cuts into revenue and takes away benefits of a regional connection to a team.
