No more Suns on Channel 45

When did the Suns first start airing on KUTP?

If I remember correctly, KUTP got the rights to the Suns in 1988. Prior to that, KNXV had them for a season or two.

Now, 45 will just be a dumping ground for MyNetworkTV and off-net reruns that can't fit on 10's schedule. They were never a strong independent/UPN station, but they were respectable in the mid-to-late '90s with their Suns numbers (the days Cox had exclusive rights to most home games).

In the early days, they were on 12. Of course, the owners of 12 at the time also had a piece of the team.

IIRC, Karl Eller, who owned KTAR-AM/FM/TV at the time, was the founder and Managing General Partner of the Suns before selling to then-GM Jerry Colangelo.

Please Jerry, buy the team back from that graduate of the Bill Bidwill Academy of Sports Ownership! ;D

On occassion, I will still see one of the old "HOT SUNS!" bumper stickers that (I think) has the old "45 KUTP-TV" logo.

Just announced: Gary Bender is retiring from broadcasting effective at the end of the Suns' season. No word on his replacement, but my guess is Tom Leander. I'd rather see an FSN/KTAR simulcast.

I loved the days of the KUTP/KTAR simulcast, when the "Suns theme song" (link below) would play going into a commercial break, on both TV and radio.

(Does anyone know if this tune has a formal title?)

The song has not been used on KUTP or KTAR for several years now...although certain Suns sponsors still use this as the background music for their radio commercials that air on KTAR…and it’s heard inside America West Arena US Airways Center during games from time to time.
