no more "tube"

Our local station has an on-screen message saying that "the tube" music channel has shut down. The tube website confirms it was because of finacial difficulties. It's a shame, I watched it quite often. It was like MTV except it didn't suck. MTV hasn't played music in years.

For those who may not have seen it. It was a music channel that was available over the air on the HDTV sub-channels.

That's unfortunate. I just found this channel last week when I put a better antenna on my TV and started pulling in more stations.

I think YouTube had a lot to do with this. Now if you want a video you can pretty much find all the music videos posted there. Sometimes they get pulled but they are back again in a few days.

You Tube, I Tunes, cable's video on demand services...all could have hundered The Tube's prospects. I enjoyed it the few times I watched, but it was always as background while I was doing chores, etc.

Of course, we don't know the internal financial issues, and whether those played a part in the demise, but really, how many people know those digital subchannels are even out there (overall in the population, not us message-board types)? There may be room for some subchannel-based networks to flourish in time, but it may be a long road that's littered with failures before we see anything really take hold.

hmm...

I'm sitting here looking at the Tube on KDAF-DT 33.2 in Dallas/Fort Worth. ??

I see on the website that it's going out of business as of Oct. 1 - tomorrow.

The biggest problem with "The Tube" was lack of national advertising. Our station just starting carrying The Tube OTA this year (took awhile for cable to place it). "The Tube" network, had slots for national advertising, but never sold those spot until recently when those "1-800" product ads started to play for CD collections, helicopter toys and other inventions. Local stations were also having problems selling local spots during the network because of people's lack of understanding how to find it. It was a great channel and network and its so sad to see its demise. I feel bad for stations that carried it because now they have an empty subchannel (and in many places cable channel) that needs to be filled with something. Raycom Media and Tribune lost a lot of $$$ on this with equipment, so who knows what will happen with that.

Re: No more "tube"

I was think to myself it WAS an alternative to MTV-Which now stands for Moronic Television. MTV used to show tons of videos 24/7; but it now turns to endless re-run marathons of stupid shows like "The Real World", "Laguna Beach", and "My Super Sweet 16". MTV is now run by the Monkeys who also run Music Video Nets VH-1, CMT, & B-E-T. And I believe they're trying to run those channels down to the ground as well.

It was a very deicisive move for the owners of The Tube and Tribune Broadcasting (Who owns KHCW in Houston). Right Now, All I see is a dark screen because it's now off the air.

I would suggest the other thing that killed it was when the FCC extended the E/I children's programming requirements to subchannels. The Sinclair stations dumped The Tube as of that effective date. (no E/I stuff on The Tube & it would have been rather expensive - both in programming fees and, probably, switching equipment - to add it locally) I think that move probably cost The Tube over half of its circulation.

That's really too bad. I watched the Tube rather often on Saturday and Sunday mornings and when my show was in a commercial.

KHCW in Houston is running a graphic on their 39.2 subchannel stating that "The Tube" has ceased operations, and that new programming will appear in the "near future." Must have just happened today, as I saw "The Tube" on over the weekend.

Too bad. Real music video channels are hard to find, at least for the various Rock genres.

I first noticed it being off the air sunday afternoon. I haven't found any of my friends that have even heard of it. They are surprised when they see me watching it, they think I have cable. They also can't figure out why my HDTV picture is so good. It seems like the vast majority of HDTV owners don't have a clue that you can actually watch television for free. It makes me sick to see a nice plasma TV sitting in someones living room and they are watching standard cable or a sattelite dish connected to the analog or worse antenna jack on the TV with a terrible picture and the aspect ration set to stretch everyone out and makes everything fat. The only way they are going to get true HDTV is to hook up the antenna or get HD cable or Sattelite with the proper HDMI cable. You can not get HDTV with a coax or RCA cables from you're sat reciever. An Uncle of mine was under the impression that over the air television was going to end and everyone would have to subscribe to cable. The television stations need to let people know that they are NOT going off the air in 2009 and that television is still free and you don't need cable to see HDTV. Just a newer TV set.
Another pet peeve is why doesn't someone educate the public that movies and TV that was shot 4:3 are suposed too look square on your widescreen TV. No stretched out and made to look fat.
The same goes for widescreen movies that have been squeezed to fit. It makes people look skinny.
to me thats almost as bad as idiots I knew in the 70's who wouldn't adjust the tint and the picture was green, or they were too lazy to adjust the vertical hold and the picture would be rolling. (a rolling picture is something most of you young whipper snappers have probally never seen)

In my area, I got a notification that WPHL-TV(My PHL 17) is no longer carrying the Tube. So, there you go.

The strange thing about it is that WPHL recently started promoting it on their main channel. Too bad - it was nice to have an actual "MTV" on the air for a while.

Look on the bright side, Buddy. There's LATV-Another video channel that does show videos ALL THE TIME. In Houston, It is a sub-channel of KPRC-TV. Cities like San Antonio, Phoenix, Orlando, Miami,-They ALL have it.

Hey, yeah, you're right!
Its gone from KCBD 11.3, and a message that says "Due to circumstances beyond our contorl, The Tube Music network will no longer be available... etc etc"

Can't say I'm surpised though.
While I liked that they played full music videos, they didn't offer anything else. No VJs, no music news, nothing. I got the feeling that it was just a bunch of videos loaded into a playlist. After a couple of videos I found myself wanting more, asking "Is this all there is?"

Well, I guess that's it then...
