No "NewsChannel 8" Tonight in CT?

Did anybody else in greater Hartford notice this tonight? WTNH-TV (ABC) channel 8 of New Haven did not run their 11 PM "NewsChannel 8" newscast. Instead, an episode of the syndicated "Insider" show with Pat O'Brien and Kathie Lee Gifford aired instead. It also looked like it ran past 11:35 PM, right through a portion of ABC's "Nightline." Did somebody at Master Control up in Chicopee, MA switch the wrong station? Two other things I noticed:

1- It wasn't Comcast of New Britain (CT) doing this. I checked the channel 8 audio at the same time on my Sony Walkman and it all matched up 100%.

2- Regular programming aired as usual on WCTX-TV (UPN) channel 59 of New Haven. WCTX is WTNH's "sister" station.

In closing, what happened tonight during the scheduled replay of their news?

I caught the same thing and emailed them. So far, no comment. They had a five-minute "abbreviated" edition with the story on the West Hartford police shootings and a quick weather, then segued with little fanfare or explanation into "The Insider." Aren't sweeps still on?

Yes, this all seemed very unannounced. No production staff maybe?

I too found it interesting that NC 8 at 11 was pre-empted, especially while flipping through the channels earlier in the night and saw a commercial announcing what was coming up on NC 8 at 11. I didn't find out the news wasn't on until I went to check the weather while the show I was watching on another channel was in commercial break.

The Insider normally airs 10:31PM-11:01PM Monday-Friday on UPN 9/10:35PM-11:05PM on Sundays. It also normally airs IIRC, 2:10AM-2:40AM nightly on NC 8.

Did they have the News at 10pm on WCTX at all? Maybe Channel 8 just wants to have the 10pm newscast and dump the 11pm one on WTNH. Just a thought.

Yes! That's exactly it. WTNH wants to dump their 11 pm newscast for insider. Heck with that pesky AD REVENUE, who needs it?

No, wait, it's a lack of personnell. Yes, all the personnell who were in only a half hour before the 11pm newscast decided to bolt out. After all, we all know that Tuesday nights are party nights in New Haven. That makes sense...

Oh ok I just thought of it. WBZ must be involved. They secretly made you believe that Ed Carroll is gone, when in fact they drove him to Elm St in New Havem , snuck in the back door, and cut all the wires in the tech rooms.
Ya that makes sense. They did it so WHDH can lead with it as their lead news story. WPRI would have lead with it, but they were busy airing promos about the newschopper at 11, after all, that's all they do is promote the newschopper.

You guys with your conspiracy theories, I love it. Don't ever change.
This entire thread was the highlight of my night...

Happy Thanksgiving!

Wow guys, I'm really confused! Just to get it straight, you're talking about NewsChannel 8 at 11PM, Wednesday, November 23, 2005?

Because I just saw the broadcast - the top story was the police officer/trooper murder suicide, followed by the train wreck in Chicago. Gil Simmons was in for Geoff Fox tonight, and they talked about the Thanksgiving Day games tomorrow in sports. The news started at 10:59, as usual. Could it have been your cable company? That is really weird, I want to make sure we're talking about the same day.

To verify what I said and saw tonight, take a look between 12:30 and 1:00 a.m., when they rebroadcast the 11PM news after Jimmy Kimbal Live, to see if they did in fact broadcast tonight.

I was talking about what aired on TUESDAY night, November 22, between 11 and 11:35 PM.

New Haven Register article says why

New Haven Register Television Editor Joe Amarante explained it on page 3 of today's newspaper. WTNH top executive Jon Hitchcock said a profile server holding the video content for the newscast crashed at a key time and a decision was made to trim the newscast to about six minutes and then air "The Insider."

Kind of makes you pine for the days when you had videotape for news reports.

Eh...

Eh, not really. VTR machines cost a lot of money, both in parts and labor.
(mechanical parts need to be maintained, and are the most common point of failure in VTR machines). And the video servers of today are a hell of a lot more reliable than in years past, almost as reliable as a stack of VTRs...

And remember that most newscasts do have one common point that could fail causing serious/major issues on the air.
(i.e. switcher, audio board, etc..)

Ha!! That's funny!
My guess was as edudated as it could be, with my lack of TV production experience!
Hey, at least it's a change from a Providence thread!!
