So Infinity's doing classic country...why didn't they do it on 92.9?

Do we, in fact, KNOW that 790 is flipping? I don't think anyone has confirmed this yet, have they?

I expect what all this rotates on is perhaps 790 has contracts that expire at midnight tomorrow; but I'm just guessing. Do we have anyone from 1960 who might have seen the changes afoot on the first floor?

There was another confirmation today. There was a good article on the front page of the Sports Section of today's Commercial Appeal. It touches mostly about Dave Woloshin. He supposely held a on-the-air wake when he heard the news and today will be his final show on WMC. Also, talks about Tiger Sports on radio. Worth checking out.

If I was in charge at WMC, Dave would not be doing a show this afternoon. By throwing the format change under the bus, Dave has once again shown himself to be a little self-absorbed weenie. Maybe if Dave could deliver more than a couple hundred sports geeks, he wouldn't find himself looking for a gig.

Nothing like compassion at a time of loss, eh? Did you used to be in management? ;)

I don't actually think Dave will be there for the whole show, because he has to do the Purdue-Tigers BB game tonight, so Forrest has to handle most of it. It will be interesting to see how it's handled.

It is odd that this got out before the change happened; I would bet CBS Radio can't be thrilled at how this was leaked, like the website URL that showed up here yesterday.

I always thought Dave was a good play by play person, but wasn't the greatest talk show host. He just didn't have that even flow to go from one topic to another. It's okay to ad lib if you are talking about one sport you know fluently. It takes prep work to have an entertaining show talking about different sports. I got that from Forrest, not Dave.

Someone please aircheck this format change!

Gang, I have a $10 bill for the first person who can get me a high quality aircheck of the format change. Preferably an emailed mp3 encoded at 128kbps 44.1. The change plus the first hour.

I'll send it paypal.

The answer to the question as to why not on 92.9.. A commitment to maintain Alternative/Modern Rock. I suspect sales are enough to continue the format rather than take a chance on Classic Country. ALTHOUGH, I did suggest that taking 92.9 in that direction might be smart from the aspect that Entercom would then be hamstrung and unable to move away from HotAC... but, as I mentioned, Entercom is blind to anything other than Buzz on 94.1 so it really doesn't matter now, does it?
______________

May not sound compassionate, but it is accurate. Dave was a talk-show host for the simple reason that he was a play-by-play guy. That's not why you make someone a talk show host. I'm not sure what 560's excuse is... I have never heard a compelling local host on that station. Memphis just doesn't seem to be a big sports talk market. The best sports host in the country...Jim Rome...couldn't pull numbers here. Even with 790 gone, there are still too many sports talk stations in the market.

Hmmmm, Dave has only been doing Tigers game on radio since 1998. However, he's been doing a talk show in Memphis since the early 80s. That led him into Showboats play-by-play, Tigers on TV, a little ESPN, etc.

Overall, I agree. But don't group in Rob Fisher, Greg Gaston and even Geoff Caulkins into that mix. And doesn't it seem coincidental that the ones I just named are the ones who don't buy time to be on-the-air?

At one time Rome did ok in men 18-34 here. The problem with sports here is it has never been done right. Name the last time you saw any of them promoting themselves? Sure, they'll do it if a client is willing to buy a remote from them. Then they show up and hang up a few banners and park their van on the sidewalk. Most folks don't even though they exist.

A FM sports talker would go over well here. But it would have to be done right. No coach and his son buying time so they can play radio. No infomercials on health vitamins on Saturday afternoon. No Whineberger or Rainey. But it will never happen.

Please elaborate further on just what "doing it right" would be. Maybe they could combine sports talk with right-wing talk radio. Wasn't Fleming a sports guy? Maybe he could provide the best of both worlds. If politics is good enough for religion, it's bound to be a viable mix with sports. I wonder how many otherwise popular football players and coaches are actually closet Democrats? Hey, folks ought to know who they are rooting for out there. Short of those kind of dynamics I would have to agree that sports talk is a big stiff in this market.
______________

Doing it right? Ok, keep your sound fresh; don't run liners, promos, station imaging that you were running 14 months ago when you changed from SportsPlus to SportsRadio; don't preempt the Cardinals for infomercials about your colon or real estate; don't sell time to some high school coach and his son so they can play radio; don't start a morning show, but then hire the now-former owner of the Highland Cue as your sidekick.

And those were just off the top of my head ;)

Now that would be funny. Fleming already thinks he's an expert on sports, just ask him. Maybe Lawler could get involved and piledrive him. Hey, we just found an event for the old Pyramid!

You are right because that is what 1960 Union and ol' Doc Flinn have given us on the dial. My point is it doesn't have to be. Jeff Whineberger, John Rainey and Tommy Harrison wouldn't even be allowed to intern for a sports station in other markets; guess that is why they buy their time in this one.

Meanwhile, more local jobs were dissolved to make way for a satellite-fed format. So much for local radio. Maybe radio stations should just go ahead and purchase XM and/or Sirius for their listeners because it seems to be doing everything it can to make sure they abandon local radio altogether.

A lot of people say Drag Racing ain't a sport... I just don't get it.

I love Drag Racing, except for the fact that I keep tripping over my high heels. But, I think that's a personal problem.
