Last year (July 4th, 2011), it appeared to viewers watching the fireworks here in Boston that followed the Boston Pops' annual July 4th concert (the fireworks show and the latter portion of the Pops' concert having been televised on CBS-TV) that some fireworks were visible behind several Boston landmarks like the Massachusetts State House or Fenway Park.
But Boston-area residents watching noted that something was fishy: Given the location of the fireworks and the angle of the angle of the shots of the landmarks, there was no way fireworks could have been launched from the banks of the Charles River and be directly behind some of these landmarks.
The Boston Globe exposed this a few days after the concert took place, and locally, it became known as "Fireworksgate".
Today's Globe has an article claiming that CBS and the organizers of the concert have promised that there will be no repeat of this embarrassment.
The article is at http://bostonglobe.com/lifestyle/st...d-this-year/ND26EYqMBdaVHaI5YdShgJ/story.html .
By the way, they could still show fireworks with Fenway Park in the foreground. All CBS needs to do is mount a camera on the roof of Fenway near home plate and aim the camera towards the Charles River. I would think that the undoctored fireworks would rise above the outfield bleachers and skyline.
Likewise, a camera atop a building that can overlook both the State House (and behind that, the concert venue) could show undoctored footage of fireworks being launched from behind the State House.
Of course, at this writing (3:40 P.M. EDT July 3rd), there is some question as to whether the concert will even take place: There is a forecast of thunderstorms, possibly very severe, for the Boston area tomorrow evening, which could scuttle everything.
