No Sale Looming, ESPN 98.7 expected to pivot to Music

"A music format operated by a third party."
If that's accurate, does that sound like the station will temporarily be leased by an ethnic programmer?

It doesn't sound like it to me, but I know nothing about it. Just like Sgt. Schultz.

My guess on the third party is MediaCo
If that guess turns out to be correct, perhaps they may run one of the two Latin music formats currently airing on the HD2's of Mediaco stations WQHT and WBLS. One is Regional Mexican, the other is Spanish A/C.
At least they would be offering formats that are not currently on other local primary signals.

That's a good, quick solution. No extra programming work required, just patch whatever HD2 it will be into the main 98.7 analog.

I don't know why this never occurred to me in all this speculative discussion!

I wonder how long after that we'd get the permanent station

Probably at some point after a sale agreement is signed. Give or take.

And it has become commonplace for LMAs to go into force even before the applications are filed with the FCC for ownership transfer.

The ball is squarely in Emmis' court. If they indeed have a deal with MediaCo while they keep looking for a buyer, the "temporary format" could start to feel like the permanent one.

I see some of you talking about an "Ethnic" music format. There is a couple of AM stations that my relatives lock onto in NYC while driving me around the city, so as a long shot, & a very interesting temporary format from a 3rd party, a Chinese music station that features both music & news from Hong Kong would be a cool thing for my people. Perhaps they will simulcast their AM on 98.7FM for the time being. I haven't seen anyone here suggest this, so this is a possibility that shouldn't be ruled out.

I'm not sure Regional Mexican would work as part of MediaCo in New York City. Qué Buena LA is well-programmed, but the audience for RM is niche and probably would only work by making it a combo buy with one of the mainstream Spanish-language stations.

IMO the biggest appeal Asian-targeted format would be like KUCD in Honolulu. English presentation, Asian music, most of it being K-Pop. There are plenty of white and Hispanic listeners who also enjoy this music.

But no one goes "outside" for stunt programming. It doesn't air long enough to justify the expense or the risk that the outside programmer will leak something before the actual flip.
I would just be "hired", or I can send hours of programming giving no information to me on the upcoming format of a radio station. I don't have to know their intentions, as long as they get the infamous "DJ Mo effect". 😅

Stunts worked when we had mechanical dials where the "needle" moved up and down the dial as we moved the knob. You got a tiny bit of every station, and if you heard something you liked, you stopped. When digital tuning became prevalent, the idea of someone scanning the dial died.

Or he may take his profit (if there is one) and run. Time will tell.
And, as evidenced with his escapade with the British Pound, he does like that kind of escapade and is not particularly concerned with any effects it may have on the economy of a whole nation.

There is no business model for a "temporary lease". It takes months and months, maybe a whole year, for a new format to start breaking even if it is successful.

They sell the station to a new total owner, or enter some kind of agreement with a third party to create a new format. Emmis has no staff in New York, so make your own assumptions.

From RBR-TVBR's afternoon e-mail, no further info given:

And that can be a syndicated format, like Westwood One offers and which has no long term commitment or any local sales effort while a permanent deal of some kind is worked on.

There are estimated to be between 800,000 and 1,000,000 Mexicans in the MSA. The issues is more about how many might accept carrying a PPM due to legal status and an intrinsic fear of "tracking".

But Qué Buena in LA is now at about its lowest level ever, and may not be a viable model as its style is now very dated after over two decades.
