No signoff for ABC?

I didn't even hear a mention about this being ABC's final telecast of the NFL. I guess they don't view it that way, with ESPN being a cable extension of ABC Sports. Another reason could be that ABC Sports is so damn arrogant that they didn't want to mention them losing a sport.

Well that, and they got most of the sentimentality out of the way on their final MNF telecast anyway.

Personally, I'd view ABC Sports as an over-the-air extension of ESPN anyway, not the other way around. It amuses me sometimes to hear people wishing for ABC to get the Olympics back, as if we would somehow get the Cosell-McKay-Arledge ABC Sports back instead of Chris Berman and Stuart Scott.

After the game, Al Michaels and John Madden briefly talked about "how great it's been".

Michaels and Madden did have a longer "farewell" at the end of the final regular-season "Monday Night Football" game in December. But I thought Michaels would have briefly said "Although we talked about it back in December, this is the final NFL telecast here on ABC Sports after 36 years. Next year, 'Monday Night Football' is moving over to our sister network ESPN, while 'Sunday Night Football' will be moving to NBC, and I'd like to wish my friends and colleagues at both network best wishes and Good Luck in covering the NFL in years to come...(turns to John Madden)...Coach, congratulations on being voted into the Hall Of Game. John, I've had the time of my life working with you, and I know you're going to do a fantastic job at NBC..(shakes hands)". Madden would have responded "Thanks, Al, and I feel the same way about you. I've been lucky to have worked with two legends, first Pat Summerall, and now you". And Michaels, who knows, could have concluded by saying "Maybe we'll be sharing an NFL broadcast booth again someday soon" (given the rumors Michaels might be going to NBC for their Sunday-night games).

But since ESPN is a sister company to ABC, the latter believes this is no great deal. During the game, there was an ESPN promo with the famous "MNF" fanfare promoting the fact that "MNF" will be moving to ESPN.

But it won't be the same come September. Madden (and probably Michaels as well) will be calling the Sunday-night games on NBC.

WOW. Dude, do you have little Al and John action figures that you used to create this fantasy or something? This has to be the strangest thing you've ever posted on here.

What I posted was what I hoped how Al Michaels and John Madden would have signed-off their portion of the Super Bowl XL telecast.

I think it did call for a little recognition of the fact this was the end of ABC's 36-year stint covering the NFL.

"I have the feeling about 60% of what you say is crap."--David Letterman underestimates Bill O'Reilly</P>

I agree it wouldve been nice to have this said

Al: Well John, its been a great time my friend, and again congratulations
on your selection into the Pro Football hall of fame,a great topper to a fantastic career,a career that continues next season as you go to another class organization, NBC..

John:Well Al, it was a great time, Monday night football was a dream ob and I am glad I came here and to be a part of the rich legacy of Monday Night Football
and of ABC Sports, and as I said on our last Monday Night broadcast, the NFL may take football from ABC, but they cant take away the memories...and maybe we will get to work together again.

Al:(Holding back a bit of emotion) I hope so to , to you my friend

(they shake hands, camera focuses on Al)

Al: And that is the closer, before we go some thank you's for 36 years of football here on ABC,to our sponsors like Ford, budweiser, and others who stayed with us through good times, and even the bad times, through various management changes, from blow outs to close games a tip of the hat to them, and to you..our viewers who also stayed with us and made Monday night Football more than a game, but a national and International event.

When Roone Arledge and Pete Rozelle got together and came up with this adventure, a lot of critics didnt think it would work,to say they were wrong
would be an understatement. its been a labor of love and a 36 year relationship that for people like Keith Jackson,Alex Karras,OJ Simpson,Frank Gifford,Joe Naimath,Fred Williamson,Don Meredith,Dan Fouts,Dennis Miller,John Madden,Chet Forte,Don Ohlmyer, and the one and only, the late Howard Cosell and myself will always be glad to have been a part of.

To our colleagues at our sister network ESPN who now take over the Monday Night Football franchise good luck and keep the tradition alive and well, and to our friends at NBC who return to the NFL field after a long absence, welcome home and keep that lead chair warm for me.

As for me, its been over 20 years as a part of ABC Sports, and this night is but one of many memories I take with me to me next journey in sports broadcasting, thank you for your loyalty and your comments as well, it has been an honor and a thrill to be a part of a rich tradition in sports television.
And so a dynasty concludes, while one continues..congratulations to the Rooney Family, coach Bill Cowher and the Pittsburgh Steelers..Super bowl XL Champs and to Jerome Betis.. a great way to come home, with the Lombardi Trophy.
They are really Dancing in the streets, not only in Pittsburgh..but also here in Detroit as the Motor City was shining bright and played host to a extra large
Football Celebration..

For John Madden,Suzy Kobler and Michelle Tayfoya, and all the men and women who for 36 years gave you the pictures, the sound, and the innovations that was ABC SPORTS, I'm Al Micheals...with the last words going to the gentlemen who made it possible...

(cue Don Meredith video)

roll credits with highlights of SBXL

Final credit roll comes as we dissolve to a shot from the sideline camera as it focuses on the ABC Sports booth, we dissolve to the booth cam and see that the booth is empty except for a still picture on monitor of Pete Rozelle and Roone Arledge..and then the booth lights slowly go out as we fade into jim mckay's voice speaking with an old version of the ABC SPORTS close from circa 1978

Did MNF use a pre-recorded ABC Sports closer in 1978? I thought many livec sports programs had a United Airlines plug and ABC Sports logo superimposed as the host reads the closer and final results.

Yes they did and THATS the close I was talking about, Jim McKay used to voice those, hense the mention,I also dig the multi colored circle one they used ..THAT was wicked!

Wonderful pieces of sentimentality from you all. It was fun to write those kind of closes even during small market football games, etc.

Alas, ABC Sports died when Disney decided that ESPN...the very network that ABC bought....would become the end-all and be-all of all sports....

Eventually, ABC Sports will have a handful of College Football games...a few Nascar races...a golf tournament here and there.....aaaaaaaaaaaannnd the Little League World --- nope. I think ESPN got that too.

Keith Jackson said it during the college football season just ended: ABC Sports died a long time ago.

I'm guessing that the smarm that is ESPN didn't want ABC to make any mention of its past. Keep in mind that ESPN is the network a few years ago that made a mockery of Howard Cosell when the net had Mike Patrick and Joe Theismann call the "fantasy" football games using NFL films highlights...and interspersing Cosells voice. A hideous, hideous exhibition of whizzing on someones grave....

Well, ESPN now has Jim Rome...who couldn't brush Howard Cosells toupee.

Even with Al Michaels off to NBC, the net will plug in Mike Tirico. instead of doing whats right and keeping Mike Patrick as the play by play man. After all Patrick has only been doing the NFL for two decades....

And Tony Kornheiser. God help us.

Great. Can't wait...(cough)

It could also be that ABC, like NBC and CBS before them, hope to get the NFL back someday too.

Did you ever think of that? (Why did I bother to ask that question when the answer is quite obvious).

Nothing personal dude BUT... :)

Cheers :)

Changes For 2006 (WAS: Re: No signoff for ABC?)

Hi everyone:

> But it won't be the same come September. Madden (and

> games on NBC.

Not only that, but there'll also be these changes....

* James Brown will be moving from FOX NFL SUNDAY to the NFL TODAY as Greg Gumbel wants to get back into the booth (which is probably just as well given how old Dick Enberg and Dan Dierdorf, CBS' No. 2 announcers are).

* Bonnie Bernstein is leaving CBS for NBC to be a sideline reporter (as rumored here).

* Armen Ketayen will be re-assigned from CBS Sports to CBS News.

No word as to who FOX has in mind to fill J.B.'s shoes (whoever they hire, they'll have to be pretty damned good though) or who CBS will bring in fill one (if not both) of their now-vacant sideline reporter positions.

Cheers :)

At least Jackson himself didn't die on the air...well, not literally, anyway!

Bonnie is not leaving CBS for NBC. She is leaving CBS to start a consulting firm called Velvet Hammer Media.
