No So Shocking....Chris Duel Out!!

From mysa.com-

S.A. radio vet Chris Duel axed from sports show

It came as a shock to S.A. listeners: Veteran local radio personality Chris Duel has been fired from his afternoon sports talk show.

His bosses gave the stock reasons: Lagging ratings and ‘”going in a different direction.”

Duel’s final broadcast with partner Jason Minnix on ESPN station KZDC (1250 AM) happened Wednesday. After that show ended at 7 p.m., Duel was given the news. “They told me I was being let go” as co-host. Duel had helped launch “The Chris and Jason Show” nearly four years ago.

Good riddance. He got fired from WOAI, almost got fired from KTSA for pulling an on air stunt on Ricci Ware and now he's been fired again. But individuals like that always have 'connections' and will slither into another spot somewhere else. There is still that smell from the firing of Carl Wigglesworth that lingers, but that skirt is still lilly white and stiffly starched. God love radio.

Oops...title should read "Not So Shocking". Oh well, so be it.

Looks like the majority of comments left on the Express-News site are mostly supportive of action that should have been carried out a long time ago. Listeners didn't care for the middle school loser juvenile hot girl talk. Aren't those two married to someone?

The next time SA has a professional well produced local sports talk show will be the first time the city has had one. The afternoon shows on both of the stations are amateurish juvenile productions, filled with teen-age boy locker room humor and topics. They're trying to be Jim Rome of 10 years ago.

I always suspected that the hot-girl talk was calculated to drive horny eyeballs to the stations' web sites. It made little sense for it to be the 50-something married guy Chris Duel's idea or the 40-something married guy Jason Minnix's idea.

Duel has been offered a sales position with the company. Given the game of musical chairs that seems to be happening in the radio business these days, he'd be wise to take it.

The real sad thing is that Duel had the lowest ratings of a low rated station, that speaks volumes about the quality of the show. The Latest numbers show KZDC with a 0.6 and the powerful ticket with a 0.5. KTKR's cume dropped from 76K to 56K, KZDC went from 47K to 50K.

I don't understand how any of the local hosts still have jobs.

I would occasional stream his show because I like him when he was on KTSA. I'm not big on sports though.
This is no big surprise. He has mentioned many a time on his show he is a USC graduate so he probably didn't work cheap.

What he has to say on his website about being terminated from the show:

http://www.chrisduel.com/

"I am overwhelmed and humbled by the many kind messages I have received after my release from Border Media.

I appreciate your words of kindness and encouragement more than you will ever know. Radio can be a crazy business. But it has been my honor and privilege to participate in a daily dialogue with the great people of my hometown on the airwaves at WOAI, KTSA and KZDC over the past 12 years. Thanks to Border Media for the most recent opportunity and best of luck to my friends Jason Minnix and Johnny Fingers Compian as they continue the afternoon show. I am looking forward to the next big adventure and will keep you posted."

interest in talking local sports had to be low in the last book. The Spurs were locked out for much of the fall and the Cowboys were barely a .500 team.

I'd by that except that the numbers for both stations for the past year or more have been terrible. It's too bad that they can't get local talent that can keep people interested in more than just the cowboys (who to me haven't been relevant since the 90s) and the Spurs (who I am a huge fan of) but are in a sport that has never been a ratings generator and always been a niche market. And it doesn't help that SA is one of the few cities without an FM sports talk. Heck Killeen - Temple - Waco has 2 FM sports talk stations, Austin has 1 and a half (I can't pick up 103.1 no matter where I am, but I believe that it exists...)

Maybe SA is a city that will never hook onto to sports talk, but I find that hard to believe, I think that it's a matter of people stopping the programming of what 'they like' rather than what the audience wants. Even though this is 'cowboy country', San Antonio is also a city full of people from around the world and especially around the United States, it seems to me that at least the local folks could try a couple of things (a) quit having hosts trying to be 'edgy', most of them just sound silly, (b) hire somebody who actually knows sports - I remember once I was driving home and happened to hit kzdc and listened for a few minutes as Duel was interviewing a former Hall of Fame Cowboy, I don't remember his name, the thing that stood out was Duel didn't talk football he actually asked if the guy had any advice on how "Johnny Stallion Campion(?)" could break his losing streak with women and would the former player mind helping out, the poor guy didn't have any idea how to respond. It was one of the most awkward, silly, off-putting things I had ever heard...(c) talk about UTSA, UT, A&M, Tech, Baylor, talk about college sports, there are a mess of alum from all over living in SA, (d) talk about the Spurs, Texans, Rockets, cowboys, mavericks, don't be so dependent on things like 'wow look at her, she's hot huh?' that both stations seem to revel in.

I will now step off my soap box, thank you for your time.... :)

Forgive me for being a compulsive fact checker. You mentioned Waco has 2 sports FMs. The radio-info ratings list mentions KLTD-FM down at the Temple end of the market. What is the other sports FM?

No problem. I travel a lot to the Waco - Temple - Killeen area so I group them together, even though they're distinct arbitron markets. :) When I travel up there, I get 106.9 out of Kempner-Copperas Cove-Killeen and 101.7 (FoxSports talk) out of I think Temple. I'm not a fan of FoxSports talk so I don't listen that carefully.

In Waco 106.9 is on 101.3 and in Temple 100.9 but since most of my business is the South side of Waco so I can usually pick up both stations clearly when I head back to the Highland Lakes. I lose 101.9 between Lampasas and Burnet on 281 and 106.9 inside Marble Falls.

Sorry to have been somewhat harsh in previous posts, but enough is enough and it is unbearably annoying when some people are continually given what they are clearly not qualified to handle, only because of "connections". I tried to listen to that sports show yesterday, hoping to sample the "new direction", but I could only stand about 10 minutes of Minnix's lifeless robotic monotone drone. It sounded as if his heart wasn't in it anymore and was just waiting for the other show to drop. I wonder how long he will last before that slot is replaced with another nationally syndicated LA worshiping show, since that miserly organization won't hire any DECENT local talent?

I've been traveling between the Hill Country and SA for the past couple of days for the rodeo and thought I'd give the two sports talk stations a listen, won't ever, ever make that mistake again. It was time for the two afternoon shows and on kzdc they were live from Rio-Rio (a great restaurant, one of my favorites, but anyway) and it was their 4th anniversary show. The production was lousy, Minnix was splattering all over the place, constant references to the 'scenery', some bizarre awards he was offering and after about I waited about 10 minutes, not a single solitary mention of anything sports related.

So dreading the next attempt I hit the button for 760 and lo and behold it was the one and only Taylor talking with a caller about how the caller's mom didn't like Taylor and was upset about something he had said, and he was using his 'I'm a cool young guy persona' and since I knew from previous listening experience that it would only go downhill from there, I switched to FM and began listening to Y-100, so sad...

Had to wait until I was on my way back home and I began to pick up 104.9 when I was between Blanco and Johnson City so it wasn't a complete loss...

My sincere hope is that if anybody does decide to put sports talk on FM in San Antonio, they don't use either of these local 'talents' but it's really no surprise why their ratings are always at the bottom.

With constant low ratings and obvious lack of talent, why are those people still employed, while others were sent to the TWC? Are they RIF proof, privileged, non-functioning seat warming human paper weights? Do they "know" someone? Why can't they sell any revenue enhancing spots during their "shows"? Why are they still there?

Ari Temkin to join Jason on Monday.

Per twitter - Ari Temkin @arisports
I will be leaving the #adamstheory on Thursday and starting with @JasonMinnix at 1250 "The Zone" #ESPN San Antonio on Monday.

Well, that's a loss for ESPN Austin.
True, although it's an improvement for San Antonio if he doesn't get sucked into the mediocrity that is SA sports talk. Who knows maybe this will force Minnix to quit pretending he's a teenage boy drooling over women and their 'sex' lives and actually talk sports. Would be a nice change

What sports were you expecting him to talk about? The Spurs are midway through their rodeo road trip, playing a bunch of teams in the east that aren't rivals. San Antonio doesn't care about other NBA teams, unless the Mavericks or Lakers are undergoing some kind of misfortune or controversy - and that's not the case right now.

Pitchers and catchers report to MLB spring training next week, but San Antonio doesn't care about baseball. As far as hockey, I doubt any of the local sports talkers could name 5 players on the Rampage. If people cared about the Rampage, the games would sell out. The last Rampage game I went to drew a little over 2,000.

Without football or the Spurs, IMO there's nothing else to talk about that, besides hot babes, that will keep an audience of 18-34 year-old working males in San Antonio glued to the radio long enough to give the station credit for them listening for a quarter-hour. If you don't like it, you're probably not part of the target.

Well OK then, I guess you told me, I have been properly chastised by a media expert :'( oh wait, based on the ratings those 18-34 year olds you're talking about aren't listening either...
