No Spot For Craig Kopp on WKRC

That's what the headline reads at the top of Page 9C in today's (Sat, 12/16/06) Cincinnati Post article by Rick Bird. I couldn't find an on-line link to the story, but apparently, Craig will no longer be a part of the 55KRC morning show when Jerry Thomas' son, Brian, takes over the show sometime after Christmas. He actually left the show after he was told on Tuesday. Brian's co-host will be John Phillips, who will make the segue from WLW/CC traffic. No word on Phillips' replacement.

Kopp might be moved to another Cincy CC entity, including Internet, and is considering other options. Based on the quotes in the article, Craig isn't very happy, not surprisingly.

Thats too bad, Craig provided the only link that show had to reasonable thought. I hope he can find a place in radio, one where he isn't pigeon-holed as the "gee, I guess we should ask what Craig thinks, he's a liberal" sidekick, like Colmes is to Hannity.

I don't listen anymore as it simply had turned into a commercial mill. I can't see that slot getting any better with just the Knee Jerk Boys being there.

I wish Craig well. His abilities were being wasted on that show.

when i moved here several years ago (from the chicago area) i thought the KRC morning show was a skit. one guy was making fun of the stereotypical NPR voice, the other the stereotypical jock - i waited for a reference to a velvet jacket, sleeves pushed up to elbows. but to my horror, it was an actual show.

craig seems like a decent guy, and i believe he should have a show on GUC or some other regional NPR station. he emits NPR with his voice and left-thinking.

jerry has grown on me a bit, but i won't miss him. i applaud everything CC has done lately. these are good moves in a provicial market like cincy that doesn't take change very well.

maybe the new guys can inject some life into a dead morning roster of AM shows.

Come on! The show was getting stale! Obviously the only person that was allowed to have any input was Jerry. Just by listening you could tell that it was your typical conservative buzz topics. Immigration, dems suck, abortion, gun control...blah blah blah. Especially since Jerry couldn't even spout the conservative point of view very well. Craig was just there to throw stuff off of and yell at...(he also never did his homework, HE ADMITTED SO ON THE AIR)... It was time for a change...Hopefully the new crew can breathe some life into a stale show. Maybe skew the audience a little younger...maybe we could have a fun, local show again. Wouldn't that be refreshing??

I rather enjoyed Jerry and Craig. Will miss them both. Jerry is one of the best this city has ever seen. I have some old airchecks of him from the early 80s when the MOR full-service AM radio wars were in full swing....WKRC, WLW, and WCKY. Man did he sound good. And for those out-of-towners who may not understand, Craig is a throwback to the days when we middle-aged farts used to listen to him on WEBN. His easy, laid back delivery is still reminiscent of those early AOR days. There's a comfort factor there for some of us.

The conservative/liberal pairing on KRC was fun and friendly, and while I tend to agree with Jerry on most things, I felt that Craig did an excellent job of presenting the liberal viewpoint. Perhaps compared to some liberals he was a bit too moderate. I noticed him becoming more moderate down through the years as he got older....like most sensible people do. ;) But I thought he did a great job of presenting the left-wing point of view to conservative 55KRC listeners who would never tune in to Air America, NPR, or any other left-leaning media. And he did so in a non-threatening manner. The now-conservative boomers who grew up listening to Craig in their younger, more liberal-minded days were OK with him. We could still relate a little to his views, remembering our more idealistic youth. But father-figure Jerry was where most 55KRC listeners are today politically and socially in our middle-aged years. The pairing of Jerry and Craig was classic Cincinnati. Perfect for this market and the folks who grew up around here.

Perhaps it is now time for a new direction. I think Brian Thomas does a good job and I really like his voice.....deep and smooth....something you don't hear much anymore on the radio. And I have always liked John Phillips but am not so sure he's very good when he does a show by himself. But he brings that regular guy perspective to the issues. I like the idea of these two together.

My only concerns would be 1) we will miss the liberal perspective, and 2) how committed are each of them to this gig? For that matter, how committed is CC Cincinnati? How long is it before they dump the local morning show in yet another cost-cutting move and throw on even more non-local syndicated programming?

here's the thing.... i'm an out-of-towner (a "tourist" as my eastside-born wife calls me), and i find it both odd and sad that when Baby Boomers talk about cincinnati, it is always in the past tense. i realize cincy had a great hay day in the 70s/80s, but those days aren't coming back, man! so from where i sit, taking one of the yesteryear things away is a good step forward.

Read the rest of my post. I believe I went on to say that it is perhaps time for a new direction. And I don't think I implied that those old days should come back. I was attempting to explain why I believe the Jerry and Craig thing had worked well in this market. And why locals like me enjoyed it.

You stated earlier in this thread that you moved here from Chicago. Great city, btw. I like it a lot. But I would remind you that this is Cincinnati, not market #3. And if I may use Chicago as a comparison.....note that big city Chicagoans like their past too. Haven't Chicago stations brought back local legends like John "Records" Landecker (WJMK)? How old and crotchety does WGN sound? Talk about a throwback to the past. And what about all that Cubs tradition?! Point is, the older people get the more comfortable they become with that which is familiar to them....be it music or personalities. This is true not just in Cincinnati but in every market. So your assertion that Cincinnatians are living in the past comes off to me as a bit smug. My apologies if I've misinterpreted your intentions.

point taken, my friend. i was coming from the fact that i've heard dozens of Baby Boomers talk about Cincy in the past-tense, and this was example #6,491. i suppose if i were to draw a distinction between your chicago examples and the cincy mindset, i'd say that in terms of chicago - WGN for example - the old stuff is revered by more than just the older crowd, whereas in cincy there are basically 2 cities co-existing: the present and the past.

WGN sounds great. i get podcasts for several of their shows. it's WLS that sounds like crap! and the programming...yikes. it's gone way down hill since i left.

to your point, though, i'm elated that Mancow is on in cincy for the same reasons you like jerry and craig. Mancow was the morning soundtrack for a big chunk of life, and to have him on here in my "new" life is amazing. so i see what you're saying, but have a few tweaks i'd like to see come about from it.

Not much chance of CC going to syndicated morning show on WKRC. What syndicated program would allow them to play the almost 30 minutes/hour of local commercials. It is ridiculous.

Actually it's 17, but let's not get facts in the way

Apparently, you don't recognize sarcasm when you see it.....When you say 17 minutes, what are you including? Even if it is "only" 17 minutes, my point remains, no syndicated program that I know, clears 17 minutes for local stations.
