No Thread to RATE DENVER TV NEWSCASTERS-- How About Here?

There's no thread for COLORADO or DENVER TV NEWS Shows. Hope nobody minds; I'd like to start one here...

Denver's wealth of evening news crews are much more professional than their sometimes insipid morning show counterparts, especially on Channel 2 & Channel 13. Those two channels enjoy a PWA, sharing their on-air talents. Channel-2 anchors Tom Green & Angie Austin step too far out of professional character, getting much too silly for my tastes. And it gets even worse from there; save for verteran weathercaster Nick Carter, some of the rest of their wake-up ensemble behave like cartoon characters. If I wanted this kind of banal banter, I'd tune in one of Denver's juvenile tag-team morning FM radio shows.

As for Channel 13, that station fired one of Colorado's most talented broadcasters, Steve Kelly. Well, they got what they paid for. Kelly's replacement(s) can read copy, but that's about it. They offer little on-air charisma, and hardly rise to the standard of confidence Steve delivered.

My Denver TV News favorites-- it's a toss-up between Channel's 4 & 7. Channel 9 is respectable, but Kathy Sabin's weather reports leave me wanting. She sounds like a reporter reading copy, while Mike Nelson, Channel 7, and Ed Green, Channel 9 both impress me as KNOWING the dynamics of weather.

What sayeth you?

You'd have better luck posting this on the NATIONAL TV board than here as COLORADO gets MAYBE one post EVERY FOUR MONTHS (If that)

That's 31 (Not 13. Channel 13 is in Colorado Springs)

But more to the point, the morning shows are meant to be lighter & a bit less serious than the evening shows as this gets people in the mood to take on the day

That's LMA (Never heard of a PWA)

Well considering that NO ONE watches Channel 2 for news anymore anyways (Except you), why bother complaining? News on Channel 2 is as good as dead anyway

You'll find the same kind of banter on AC outlets like KOSI too

Not sure if Steve got fired or whether he just simply became one of the many "Sacrificial Lambs" stemming from the merger of the two news operations (I tend to think the latter) but yeah I agree with you about Steve

That said, Mike Hedrick isn't bad though

My opinion on the Big 3.....

Channel 4 is STALE (Typical of a CBS O&O)

Channel 7 is perhaps the most underrespected 3rd place news operation in the country (They're only in that position because of the rock solidness of the other two at the top). Because of this, I'd rather watch Channel 7 than any of the others

Channel 9 is OK (Better than 4 but I only watch them when 7 & 31 aren't doing news)

JMO.....

Cheers :D

PWA means "Professional Working Agreement (or Arraingement)", but yes, "LMA" would have been more applicable to the trade.

Re, "Sacrificial Lamb"-- Yes, the local FOX affilliate seemed to have acknowledged Kelly's demise as a cost-cutting measure. Programmers there must have been laboring under the illusion that viewers wouldn't notice, or wouldn't care anyway. Wrong. Steve seems to have landed on his feet, having done fill-in gigs on Focus On the Family, and more recently, a spot on AM 850.

Here's my overall take on Denver's local TV talent: Disappointingly inferior. I find the TV News talent in Albuquerque's relatively smaller market to be more professional and competitive than Denver's, evening or morning! They too engage in cross-banter, but their's is much more crisp and professional. They honor boundaries, stopping short of sounding silly and frivilous.

Albuquerque's TV investigative reports are superior to Denver's as well. Those reporters are much tougher, much more hard-hitting. I get the impression they've been liberated by a more generous creative-license than Denver's reporters.

Great idea. Can this thread be copied to another board?
