NO WONDER THE SOUND... DIED

AM I THE ONLY PERSON WHO CAN SEE WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igtP-GicIUQ&feature=player_embedded#!

DO I HAVE TO SAY MORE?

I could say more, but I choose not to.

In other Earth shattering news the walkman has been replaced by the cd player ipod.

Anyone listen to 92.3 Now yesterday? Tictak played lots of 90's Hip Hop and yes even freestyle ( K7,TKA,Cynthia,Johnny O,Rockell).

Wait....KDM has tricked me into another circular freestyle discussion....I'm out.

Merry Christmas to all

This thread would have been timely.....18 years ago. :(

The reason why freestyle died was because the sound had become over-saturated, often enough with greedy producers putting ANYTHING out there without giving one lick to the production quality or vocal chops of a singer, so as long as they looked good during performances. Radio took notice of that and the music stopped getting airplay....with the only airplay that would happen for freestyle was during the golden period (1986 - 1991).

To be fair, this artist alone did not do this.

Yeah, I have a freestyle record that has terrible men vocals, haha, much more worse than the video you showed

Heres what i hear music and less vocals... you have to strain to hear the words. Yes freestyle was big back in the days but now its mainly about the money and lipsyncin and thats why atlantic city made its big bucks recently with its forever freestyle events.

When will the younger artist start to bring freestyle back?? they wont.. go into smaller clubs and you will see older thirty and forty somethings singing to fifty somethings artist on stage doing "their thing" from "back in the days". Its a shame. You dont sound the same, why are you onstage lipsyncin when your voice was twenty years younger???

Granted we loved them when we were young back then, but you cant bring back a dead horse. Forgive me if im being too harsh but freestyle is dead.

It's not harsh. It's actually a reality that most fans won't accept.

Freestyle is "alive" when it's based on the golden era (1986 - 1991). As long as the fans keep that in their hearts, that music is alive. But the music after that was so maligned and it gets to what I said in another thread about bad production, cheesy voices, etc. that it pushed things downward.

I DO think however, that down the road a new "Latin/outer borough NYC/working class" type dance sound CAN happen. However, it CANNOT be called freestyle. Anything else BUT freestyle. If such a new music can happen, it must be on its own merit and not "piggyback" on a genre that was big 20+ years aga that is considered "parents/grandparents" music. It has to get to that twenty something crowd again, just like freestyle did for me and others back in the 80's/90's.

GOLDEN ERA...such as the swing and the charleston, lol!! Freestyle is alive when you want to escape back to the days when all seems "perfect" so to speak and all you worried about was your boyfriend breaking your heart:) I'm just as guilty as singing those song and realizing they were a part of some sort of hate, love, happy, heartbreak in my life.

During those "glory days" many it seem was processed and yes there were those that took taken advantage of the young that wanted to be a "freestyle artist", no talent but "hey we can make you a star, if you can sing in a high pitch voice and have a girl/guy group'!

As everyone waits for this "second coming" and we are all "holding our breath" because its gonna be "any day now"... nah, dont see it. Too many years have passed and no one wants to step forward because when it "was good it was good" and "if it aint broke dont fix it"!

I really think people in that genre are stuck in that "comfort zone". Let's also add that a lot of artists were SCREWED with contracts back then.

Think about it, you tell a Latino kid in high school to sign something that will make them famous, and they won't think twice but to sign it figuring the fame and money and nothing else. Yet if they hired a lawyer back then and had them read the contracts carefully, there were things in there that benefit the label more than the artists and the artists have no say in it since they signed the contract and it became legally binding. It didn't happen to every artist but it happened to quite a few.

While Freestyle music did die off a while back, every now and then you will see something "pop up" that could be considered "Freestyle". For example, the late 90's you had Cynthia's return, and artist like Angelina (remember "Reach out and touch me"), and more recently, there was tracks done by latin Hip Hop artist (and usually featured Pitbull somewhere on the track!)

Freestyle has always been tied to Latin music, and it's elements are still found in Latin Hiphop.

Just my 2 cents..

Hey Tony and Hot96pdx
.....yes alot of managers and their lawyers were scam artists trying to take advantage of high schoolers trying to make it better for their family as it usually is in Latin communities-since you put it out there. And yep you yes it and i agree Tony, those contracts fool them into getting less than what they should..no royalties going into lets say 2010, shameful.

Now, Hot 96pdx, Pitbull laid down some tracks with his vocals, BUT he isnt going to make a freestyle song lets all agree on that..sooo while we ponder this topic...

...again, late 80s - 90s, that was then this is now...and we wait for its great return like the great pumpkin charlie brown in the pumkin patch.

 cant wait to catch it..thanks ;D

happy new year guys :D

It's on every Thursday, same time and station but I understand it's probably waaaay pass your bed time. ;)

You just joined this board so you might not understand how this topic has been talked about ad nauseam and it just goes in circles. I might have been abrasive with my point and for that I apologize to anyone offended, yet it still does not take away from its validity. Which is, how can you discuss what freestyle needs to do when you can't even name me a single track pass 1995? And I'm not trying to single anyone out. It's a general statement. Freestyle didn't die in 91.However,It did lose major label support.Independents were the only ones who continued issuing freestyle releases. You can't have a national Top 10 hit without major label support.Especially when major market stations like HOT 97,Power 106,Q 102,all but purged freestyle from their playlist.

Still, 1992's Billboard dance song of the year was Lil Suzy's Take me in your arms. Jocelyn Enriquez,Lina Santiago,Angelina,Spanish Fly,Buffy,Johnny O,Rockell and various others that escape my mind all charted on the Billboard Hot 100 in the mid to late 90's.

And to a certain extent there is a modern freestyle influenced sound out there when you think of some of the hits from Jay Sean,Akon,Colby O'Donis and yes even Justin Bieber. In fact, Jordan Sparks charted with her remake of "Let the music play" in 2008. The issue is most of the old guard in freestyle won't and don't accept the new sound as freestyle. It's never going to be like 1988 again and in that sense I agree with you. That sound will never come back. Yet,currently we do have freestyle infused hybrid songs out there such as:

Adrienne Bailon Ft Ghostface Killah-Take You Home
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oxtq2VmHPwk

DJ Size ft. J. Lourenzo & Big Steve - In My Eyes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SW1lzjdui-w

Justin Bieber- Latin Girl
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKUt7DcOQYc&feature=related

And one of my favorites right now...Kris Menace Feat. Emil 'Walkin' On The Moon'. This one's a lil more of a blend but it reminds me of the early Jellybean tracks with Madonna.

Now,some of you might accept this as a new twist on freestyle and others will not.But the beats and melodies speak for itself. And by all means, knock yourself out talking about how freestyle died if you feel that is still the case. I think I made a good case that it has not without even posting the freestyle that has come out from freestyle labels like Artistik and Tazmania. I officially retire from discussing freestyle on this dance board. 2011 is here and I want to concentrate on the future hits and not the past. ;)

Happy 2011!!
