No Yankees/Red Sox on WHAM-TV tonight!

So the Yankees/Red Sox TV coverage, which is on WWOR/My 9 in NYC instead of YES tonight, was supposed to be on WHAM-TV in Rochester (moved over from sister station CW-WHAM, which usually carries those games, but since it's Friday and ABC's in repeats, why not put it on the big signal?)

Except that something's wrong with the sat feed from YES, which produces the game for WWOR. Instead of tonight's game, WHAM's getting a feed of a "Yankees Classic" game from a few years ago. So they're going in and out of black, rolling every spot in the library, and finally - at 7:17 - they have Don Alhart off-camera with an announcement that they're trying to get the feed back and will run "Access Hollywood" in the meantime.

I seem to think there was a time when they'd have had a "technical difficulties" slide up and an announcer with it, and it wouldn't have taken 17 minutes, but that was then, apparently, and times have changed. (As witnessed by the streaming MLB audio from WRKO that I'm listening to, in lieu of the TV game, while I type this.)

I'd swing the antenna around to see if the other Yankees broadcast affiliates upstate are having the same problem, but this year's lineup is a bunch of stations I can't get - WNGS in Buffalo and WSTQ-LP in Syracuse - as opposed to WPXJ and WSPX, which I can see here.

WSTQ did carry the game. If you have a digital TV, the WSTQ signal is carried on one of WSTM-DT's subchannels.

I wonder if the CW-WHAM problem was caused by Rochester or the master control center in Syracuse (at WSYR). Do Rochester's own people override the CW feed to take the game, or does the central server in Syracuse take care of it? The 17-minute lag on making the announcement leads me to believe it may have been a back-and-forth between the two markets. Or maybe they just were hoping to get it switched "any second now" and it took them 17 minutes to realize, "yeah, we're definitely screwed here."

Either way, if WSTQ had the game on, I'd assume it wasn't a network-wide problem, but something isolated to just CW-WHAM. Could be someone punched up the wrong coordinates, or maybe YES had to make a last-minute change and nobody caught the memo.

I have to wonder how many diarykeepers in Syracuse inadvertently give credit to WSYR while watching Yankees games fed via WWOR, because the "my9" bug is on for the entire game. Those of us "in the know" would never make such an error, but I do wonder if the general public ever gets confused about it.

I do have a DTV tuner, but the WSTM-DT signal isn't quite strong enough to make it here unless there's a bit of tropo enhancement, and it was dead-band conditions last night. I'm hoping it gets better when WSTM-DT moves from 54 to 24 in a couple of years.

I'm told on another board that WXXA in Albany had the game on in full last night, so whatever the problem was, it wasn't at the uplink end.

I don't know, either, whether something like that on CW-WHAM would be downlinked and switched in Syracuse or in Henrietta. (And I should note that the game last night wasn't on CW-WHAM - it was moved to the mothership on 13 in hopes of getting some ratings on a night when ABC was mostly in repeats.)

Also, Friday night is the CW's biggest night of the week with Wrestling.

Ah...hadn't thought of that at all! Good point!

There were apparently further glitches overnight with what were supposed to be the delayed broadcasts of the pre-empted ABC primetime programming. My mom followed what the crawl said at 10 and set up the VCR for some Barbara Walters special that was supposed to air at 3:08 AM, and she reports that she ended up taping Access Hollywood instead. She wasn't pleased!

Well at least she had a VCR instead of a DVR -- and there was some chance to re-schedule it to tape at the updated time.

It's impossible to DVR shows like The Simpsons or Family Guy during football season. You never know when the game will end, and neither does Fox! They try to guess, but the game always goes over. I can't wait until the day they finally roll out DVR's that can get "instant" schedule updates, to adjust timed recordings accordingly when games or other special events run late. To be honest, I'm surprised it hasn't already been done. Or maybe it has, but TimeWarner's just dragging its heels on it. But I'm meandering off topic now, so I'll shut up.

My suggestion is if you are going to record a show on DVR and a baseball game is on just set the record time on the DVR longer than the scheduled program.

For example when the Blue Jays played the Yankees the other night I set my DVR to record for 2 hours after 10 pm because I knew that the game was going to go over that time limit. So I got to see the last two innings of the game, then was able to see the show I wanted to watch.
