NOAA WEATHER RADIO

Fry's will run them fairly cheaply, too. But stay away from the Midland handheld model; I like Midland and have used their Weatheradios for 31 years now, but this little yellow handheld is a piece of confusing junk. Display's horrible; all the LCD slots faintly show black all the time, the battery life is in terms of days, and it won't go loud enough to get one's attention. Programming's a b!tch as well (it is indeed S.A.M.E. technology, but has weird and hard-to-change defaults.) $17 on clearance at Northern Tool, but don't waste your money.

My Midland desktop at home works great...none of the issues the handheld has. $33 four years ago at CVS. Still a steal even today for a SAME unit.

While we're talking weather, am I the only one that resents The Weather Channel showing "Storm Stories" and other related junk during the times and dayparts that severe weather normally hits our area? Good luck getting those warnings. What I'd give to just have the weather radar back on a dedicated channel instead. Thank God we've got the web now.

We had a stipped down version of the Weather Channel with Basic Cable, when Comcast was here. But now, wonderful Time Warner has no such option ! ! I CAN'T WAIT FOR CALBLE CHOICE TO BECOME LAW ! ! ! ! Then, I can cherry pcik WHAT I WANT, AND stay within a prescribed Budget!!

As for NOAA warning on TV... you do know that CH 8 has tham continuosly on their SAP.

Also, PromiseLand TV faithfully scrolls Wanrnings across their programming...

In the new paradigm of TV broadcasting, I think that News Channels (and really ALL Channels) should display all commercials AND programming in letterbox, and, at the same time, scroll a Newsfeed at the bottom, below the letterbox, CONTINUOSLY AT ALL TIMES..... [With the customer having the option to turn the newsfeed scroll, ON... or OFF, at will).

Mike -

Check this out:

http://www.grlevelx.com/grlevel3/

I have this program running continuously on my computer. Best 80 bucks I've
spent, but I admit I'm a big weather nut.

Download the trial program for Level 3 and see what you think. You'll get radar,
warnings, and the ability to use some pretty cool add-ons with the full version.
These add-ons allow you to customize your own radar with street level maps,
icons, road markers, watch boxes, etc. It's an awesome program that many storm
chasers and spotters use.

Let me guess you have Verizon cable or Sat.? I have Verizon cable and internet where I live in Carrollton. That is the only thing I donot like about our cable line up is that there is no dedicated channell for channel 8's radar just the NBC weather Plus on (channell 860)
and The Weather Chnls. radar on (CH49)

I'm having Verizon FIOS installed tomorrow, coincidentally...and I'm ready for some LOCAL programming again! The dish is ok, well within the budget, but no real local info (sure, 4, 5, 8, etc are there, but just the generic US maps play during the "Local on the 8's" on the Weather Channel;) oh, and if a storm DOES come up, the signal goes bye-bye. I won't miss that part, scrambling around for a portable (analog) TV with an internal antenna to pick up the local stations' weather with! Oh, and Verizon has 140 additional channels for my amusement.

Thanks for the heads up!

Just a bit of humor here... In light of how many channels all of these cable providers offer, does Springsteen need to update his "57 channels and nothing on" song? ;)

Please forgive the students in our classroom who haven't learned yet...

I bought a bourgeois house in the Hollywood hills
With a truckload of hundred thousand dollar bills
Man came by to hook up my cable TV
We settled in for the night my baby and me
We switched 'round and 'round 'til half-past dawn
There was fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on

Well now home entertainment was my baby's wish
So I hopped into town for a satellite dish
I tied it to the top of my Japanese car
I came home and I pointed it out into the stars
A message came back from the great beyond
There's fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on

Well we might'a made some friends with some billionaires
We might'a got all nice and friendly if we'd made it upstairs
All I got was a note that said "Bye-bye John
Our love's fifty-seven channels and nothin' on"
(Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on)

So I bought a .44 magnum, it was solid steel cast
And in the blessed name of Elvis well I just let it blast
'Til my TV lay in pieces there at my feet
And they busted me for disturbin' the almighty peace
Judge said "What you got in your defense son?"
"Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on"
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on

I can see by your eyes friend you're just about gone
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Fifty-seven channels and...

Robert Bass had a REALLY great idea when he suggested that The Boss update the "57 Channels with Nothing On" melody for today's "unlimited" channel numbers on Cable/Satellite TV packages. I have Dish Network's "Top 200" package - and yet I CAN'T find anything to watch that's really worth a flip at any time. This DOESN'T even cover the weather-related programming that's available.

Which everyone in this topic forum has a really good point. The Weather Channel has pretty much evolved from its continuous "24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week" coverage to include documentary shows at least fifteen times a day, so as to provide an excuse for their top executives NOT to have to hire full-time meterologists for every single shift as this process could prove costly. Seems to me like the ONLY thing these executives actually WANT to pay for is their $1.5 Billion big-rig monster pickup (or another applicable waste of money).

Looks like there are more than a few of us who remember that song.....it was so true then and today...I have Dish Top250....I watch Science, Discovery, Comedy Central, and Adult Swim on Cartoon Network (hey I like Family Guy and Futurama...but I dont dress the parts like some people out there do like the Tron Guy....geesh get a life!) BUT most of the channels I feel are a waste of money to me....I dont watch the sports channels (not a sports fanatic but the ones I do like I get off OTA TV just fine)....Pastor Scott (and his former X Rated widow) and his like are a laugh to me......I watch them when I am bored and need a good chuckle....or I want to see what Melissa Scott is wearing today; her wearing a collar can be interesting (I'll pass on the joke here)...and the news channels just get (yawn) so boring at times......or slanted (and Im a moderate mostly...I cant stand O Reilly or his opposites! But you gotta love John Stewart!)...oh well, with a BIG dish, I dont lose that much during rain...(get rid of the 18incher....bigger IS better ;)

updated to

"Got a hundred & thirteen channels of $#*% on the T.V. to choose from."

Sorry, that one doesn't count, because that's not the main theme of the song. ;)

My Radio Shack Hazard Alert Radio 12-262 has been flashing SIGNAL LOSS since sometime last night, until now.

Has there been an outage in the DFW area ?

I usually get my NOAA from KAC 55 (162.550).

Surprise ! Surprise !

When I checked the radio again at 1:30pm.... it was receiving KAC 55 once again :)

Try KAC-56 (162.400)

Anybody remember back when NOAA D/FW still had real, live people on? There was this dude who was clearly a 'soul' and 'jive talkin' jock in the making that worked several shifts a week. It was hard to monitor him during bad weather and not laugh-as he was 'layin' it down' even though half of South Dallas was being annihilated by a storm.
