Nobody asked me but...

...these are my thoughts punching around the dial for the past couple of weeks while clearing out the family home...

- The Oasis sounds good. Really good. Like the best that signal's been programmed in ever. They're not as poppy as KOOL (no Dancing Queen or Hungry Like The Wolf) but they're in a position to poach listeners from both KSLX and KOOL. The only thing holding them back is being a rimshot/translator duo.
- KSLX sounds good, too. I have no nit to pick with them.
- KOOL is basically KEZ without currents. Problem is, KEZ has a superior morning show.
- I didn't find myself listening to KYOT or KOOL as often as I usually do because KOAI was giving me fewer reasons to punch out.
- If you're hitting seek to get to Live 101-5, chances are you'll stop on 101.1 and stay for a few songs before you realize you didn't make it to 101.5.
- Mega was reminding me a lot of Magic in San Diego.

KSLX, KYOT and KOAI are all sounding great right now. Will be interesting to see if KOOL listeners forced out by nearly 2 months of Christmas music come back or stay with the competition.

What a sad, sad downfall for what was once the greatest Oldies station in America (sorry WCBS).

It’s bad when there are stations that replicated the old KOOL that sound better today than the real KOOL here in Phoenix. KOOL 102.3 in Las Vegas comes to mind along with KOOL 99.1 in Eugene, Oregon and KOOL 107.3 in Victoria, B.C., Canada. All these stations replicated the original KOOL and still use their call letters and play 60’s music, but the original KOOL is swirling down the drain and abandoned 60’s music a long long time ago. Sad.

That leaves Oldies 92~Seven playing music from a long, long time ago. So here's to the good ol boys drinkin' whiskey and rye while remembering the day the music (and Fun Lovin' KOOL-FM) died.

I don't get what's so sad about this. Stations change. I'm sure everyone here can name all those old AM stations that played those songs when they were currents. I bet they're not still playing those same songs today. Time marches on.

Yeah, I didn't listen to KOOL when they played 60s music and I wouldn't listen to them now if they went back to it...

But it seems like Jim Ryan is aiming all of the Entercom classic hits stations at their AC competition, and KEZ is a tough station to beat.

In some markets, like Philly, they also own the AC competition.

It's going to become tougher as there are so many stations and formats basically playing the same songs.

I can't speak for ASUGeorge but for me I wasn't just talking about the music but also the presentation. I miss the guys (and occasional gal) who made listening to the music fun. You know, talent that had the knack for setting up the next song, history of the music, making fun of the commercials (and occasionally the boss).

I have all this music on my personal devices and have no need to listen to a radio station any longer - except when I want personality in between the songs. Not getting that today and that is the saddest thing of all.

Outside of the holiday season, I see KEZ as vulnerable. Outside of mornings, the talent is voice tracked from other cities (but how many people care about that given that the station is mainly used as a background music service at offices?). I would imagine a well-programmed station on a full stick with local DJs can beat them, or does the KISS-FM vs. Live 101.5 battle show that listeners don't care about live, local talent?

If you listen to a currents-based station, you'll get that today, just as you did 50 years ago. But you'd have to listen to current music, and we all know how you feel about that.

I think we proved back in 1993 at KYOT that live and local doesn't matter. It still doesn't.

A few exceptions include:

AMD (if your audience wants that from you)

Newstalkers wanting to provide an alternative to syndicated shows

Media Hut students who pay us Big $$ in hopes of getting a gig

I have tried......I honestly have but the only word that comes to mind there is VAPID! It is perhaps the same description my parents might have used back in the 50's to describe my DJ's of record but I listened to several rock stations over the years and those on-air people seemed to age right alongside me (to a point as virtually all are off the air now). We do get a bit of the old days on KSLX but it isn't quite the same. Until about 15 years ago KOOL was......really KOOL!

I thought “Rhythm & Rock” KYOT was jockless. That’s how I remember it.

Back to the same signal, The Mountain proves that a jockless format can work with the right music mix.

Yeah, I actually do agree with you landtuna. It is all about the jocks and presentation as it is the music. I loved Steve Goddard and the history / knowledge he brings to the music he plays. When KOOL canned him, they lost a great talent. Now, he’s on Oldies 92.7 doing his thing the way he wants, playing the music he knows, all live and local. Luckily with Steve, I get both the presentation I like and the music I love. KOOL has lost that.

Rhythm & Rock was jockless. I'm referring to 6 months later when we blew it up for Smooth Jazz and middays, afternoons, and nights tracked days in advance on DAT tape loaded into the computer.

Talaya, Blake, and Barbara put in the effort to make the station sound like Phoenix even though they only visited the city a handful of times.

Hate to break the news, but Kool 107.3 in Victoria is currently playing the latest from Drake. Kool hasn't been Kool Oldies up here for several years. Still "Kool" though, and the ratings have improved dramatically. It's all hit radio with Ryan Seacrest in the afternoons....
