Nobody ever mentions when the music comes out to play

I will put this on the Philly board, due to the fact the signal is city grade here and many people listen to them in the area. When NJ101.5 plays music on the weekends, Friday night until Monday morning, I always listen. I think the playlist is great, it seems like a Rock Hits type approach. Nobody else in the Philly market sounds as professional and great music wise as they do. They have moved away from the real oldies and concentrated on more of a recent approach, they are fun to listen to. Why don't they drop the talk and use this format full time, would it work, did any other station ever try this format on the local dial. You always hear 101.5 for their talk content but nobody ever mentions their music, its like it doesn't exist or nobody thinks they play music, they are just all talk. That is what I thought until I stumbled across them a few months ago.

Every time I visit Philadelphia, I love listening to Big Joe Henry. I can't think of any DJ working today who does a better job. In most other markets in the country, "PPM rules" would cause PDs to disallow jocks from putting on a show like Big Joe's.

And despite what all of the PPM devotees say, I find that the average listener knows who Big Joe is. Are there all that many jocks in all that many markets who are even known anymore? Sure, some morning hosts are, as are some Heritage jocks, like Scott Shannon up in NYC.

I also love listening to 101.5 on the weekends...especially the all 80s request show on Saturday Night. I wish WOGL would follow their format, but they are still playing their 3 60s songs an hour. I do miss Matt Ryan. He used to do the 80s show. The Jersey Guy is now doing the 80s show. Btw, Big Joe Henry is great!!

Big Joe also had a short lived variety show on METV, Sunday nights, it was hilarious, don't know why it was cancelled. BJ is a great Jock and he sounds refreshing, without being a showoff like most air personalities.

NJ 101.5's approach is brilliant in many ways and this is one of them. Talk radio stations have huge drops is listeners on weekends. NJ 101.5 counters that with classic hits. They also have been careful to keep moving the music forward in time to keep the target age group for classic hits on weekends the same as it is for their "water cooler talk" format during the week.

Some stations do occasional music shows on weekends, like that Philly right-wing talk station that shall not be named and runs a long-standing Sinatra show. WABC for a time did a weekend show bringing back the era of Musicradio 77. But I'm not aware of anybody who does a complete weekend flip like NJ 101.5.

You're all so right! He is without a doubt the greatest radio host in our area. He actually sounds like he likes his job and cares about the listeners! Kudos to WKXW- WOGL can learn a lesson or two from them.

They should have "The Music Comes Out To Play...in HD" on their HD2 24/7. Or have the "best of" talk reruns on the weekends on the HD2.

I could not agree more, as a supporter of HD radio, which most people hate for some unknown reason. If they ever get an HD-2 they should put the music on it, whether it be what they are playing now, or 50's/60's oldies which was the rumor a few years back before they even went HD. I think if a station has or goes HD they should at least have one side channel, its a disgrace to have HD with no sides. WJBR is a prime example being HD for over five years with no HD-2.

I regularly travel all over the country and listen to the radio everywhere I go. I also listen a great deal online. I honestly can't think of a better jock today than Big Joe. I'd even say he is better than Scott Shannon or Charlie Tuna. Can anyone think of a better jock?
