NOBODY KNOWS WHAT DANCE MUSIC IS, PART 2

View Part 1 Here: http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=152124.0
I had to resurrect this because it seems to have become relevant here once again.

First, I'm going to present a brief list of instructions on how a genre shall not be defined.
A song genre should not be established or determined by:

* who's vocals are used over the instrumental
* the age of the vocalist or producer
* how popular or unpopular the song is
* your personal opinion of the song
* the government
* what the producer or artists THINKS it is or chooses to call it
* the radio station slogan of the station playing the music
* how famous the vocalist is
* whether or not people dance to it
* MTV
* the record label a song is licensed under
* American Idol
* a mixed / unmixed cd or dj compilation containing the song in it
* what you want it to be
* religion
* the type of club / venue the song is played at
* what your best friend, neighbor, relative, or talking pet believes it to be

I'm beginning to find that many of my past posts may become convenient in 2010 because now that I've pretty much said it all in 2009, I probably don't ever have to talk again!! Just resurrect!! - http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=152124.0 - Woohoo!! Isn't life just great folks? Well I surely hope you believe in life after death because I have a feeling I may be resurrecting a lot of stuff this year. This is very similar to knowing that the possibility of arguments may arise in the future, so you record all your rebuttals and everything you have to say one time, put it to multiple c.d's., then just handing them out to all the nay-sayers who don't fully "get it" to review, as you move along.

Lastly (and I think I shall get this quote trademarked as much as I use it), whether or not we choose to accept, embrace, and use this new generation electropop sound to our advantage,

SOMEBODY IS GOING TO TAKE CREDIT FOR THIS SOUND IN THE END AND RUN WITH IT.

There are two simple choices: We can either

A. Embrace the sound, accept it for what it is, and use it as a tool; A mechanism to step ourselves up and prove the sound can work and be done successfully if done the correct way. Collaborate, communicate, share ideas, teamwork with those who show interest in our sound, and just "fake it until we make it" if we must to take advantage of this HUGE POSSIBILITY we now have to rise up- WITH the help of those who are already on top.

OR

B. Just sit back with spite, reject it, hate on it, and leave it up to the general public and everyone else to "steal" the sound, define it as they wish, take credit for it, then run off to something else afterwards as we sit here thinking "Well, we had our chance to rise up, but we chose to reject it instead of creatively collaborating and embracing those who are beginning to reach out and show some interest and appreciation towards 'our' sound and letting them help us rise back to at least an acceptable level".

All these "genius idea" collaborations like David Guetta ft Akon or Tiesto ft Three6mafia...etc that people are thinking up TODAY, I've been thinking about and telling people since 2003. This whole new freestyle meets booty bass and electro sound, along with the trance / house meets r&b / pop sound I've been thinking of since... maybe 2000. And this hip hop / electronica sound I've been trying to preach since.. about 1998! Now it's FINALLY unfolding and happening in 2010 and I see the problem! Too many people are so close minded that even though someone at least thought to start the trend, it will still be rejected by many because its not how it's "supposed" to be! It's not how it was done in the past! And it also doesn't help when radio jocks themselves introduce a new song or collaboration that falls outside their frame of thinking as "to the left" or "weird" or making some comment to indicate and subconsciously communicate to their listeners in some fashion that what they are about to hear is not supposed to be accepted as "normal". This is the problem we have today. I agree that many of today's hits may not be all that up to par lyrically and quality-wise, and may not be as "real" as some of us wish it to be, but it is what we have NOW and what can and will help us -IF we decide to embrace it, perfect it, and properly use it to our advantage. Anyway, I'm sitting here wasting time talking.. in 2010... something I said I wouldn't do. Let me stop and get some other things done because whether or not I talk, choose to make my day productive, sleep all day, go out and date girls, rent a D.V.D, stand in line at Wal-Mart, watch the olympics ...etc, one fact still remains the same in the end.

SOMEBODY IS GOING TO GET CREDIT FOR THIS NEW GENERATION OF SOUND, AND RUN WITH IT.

We can accept it, or reject it. SOMEBODY is going to claim it.
Please have a delightful day my friends.

If anybody knows what dance is, it is I, provided the music is what I dance to. This, of course does not include ridiculous contest dancing to beef up ratings for a dj.

I'll have a fine merlot. Thank you.

This one is a dancing tune for just now, by Rick Astley, and in its entirety is so very perfect.

"Never gonna give you up,
Never gonna let you down,
Never gonna run around and desert you,
Never gonna make you cry,
Never gonna say goodbye,
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you"

"...knocked off the UK number-one spot by M/A/R/R/S “Pump Up the Volume” who were sued by Stock Aitken Waterman using a distorted sample from their hit single “Roadblock”. [excerpted from Last FM article)
