YES! THAT'S RIGHT! I'VE COME TO THAT CONCLUSION!
And I finally come to that conclusion today, not only because of all the arguments between what is dance, not dance, real dance....etc, but also because of all those people who think anything they don't like must (or might) be techno!
...Ok I'm lying - I didn't really come to this conclusion today - I did way before.... but the specific date and time in which I've come to that conclusion is pretty much irrelevant right now. The point is
NOBODY KNOWS WHAT DANCE MUSIC IS ANYMORE!
THE BENEFIT:
All those people who think everything (fast) is "techno" and also like many of today's uptempo hits (or hear radio constantly bottlefeeding it), they'll just assume "techno must be in" so they will be much more willing to open their minds and much easier to "try new things on"
THE DOWNSIDE:
This will not help the dance community much, as the dance community themselves continue to argue and somewhat be just as confused as the other people who do not care for dance, or don't care to know / learn more about it. After a while, when someone no longer knows how to classify or define something, a new definition will eventually take its place and get the credit for it.
SO, WITH THAT BEING SAID,
I have to bring up something I discovered yesterday on this board. Yes, I've mentioned L.A.'s Power 106 quite a few times on this board, and I do agree that their "where hip hop lives" slogan / positioning statement is a bit... off ... to say the least... BUT, I would never go as far as to say they should change it to "where techno / house lives"! Actually!!!! Actually!!! Here! let me just provide the link so you can see it for yourself! (Just go to the third post on that page) http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=129072.10
SO........................ Yes, people ARE noticing things... things ARE changing, and people ARE seeing it as a form of dance coming back (very beneficial) BUT!!! This is not techno at all! I guess much of it is a form of dance, maybe even house, but I would not go as far as to say a station playing Hip Hop and Electronic influenced Pop hits should be labeled a techno / house station, ESPECIALLY if the reasoning behind it is mostly because you're personally unhappy with their formatting! However, I do also agree that they should not keep the "hip hop" slogan with many of the stuff they decide to play.
Anyway, no point in me even bringing it up or discussing it because just like politics and other things, talking about it will not really change anything. I bet as I post this right now, there are many other people at the same time on YouTube or somewhere commenting on a Rihanna or Pitbull song somewhere talking about how stupid techno is and that rappers today aren't "keeping it real" anymore, or artists have "turned stupid". Also, I'm sure there are people somewhere hearing songs with dance beats with a pop artist's vocals taking anger management classes because somebody is calling it dance. I know it's happening, and it is what it is, so..... what more can I say?
We are within a time of
HUGE, GIGANTIC
possibilities, yet at the same time, we're living in a state of confusion. It will be interesting to see what happens in the end... but one thing I do know for sure is that eventually
SOMEBODY IS GOING TO GET CREDIT FOR THIS NEW GENERATION OF SOUND, AND RUN WITH IT.
