Nolan Research?

We got a phone call from Nolan Research for a music survey/poll. They said they weren't affiliated with any radio station. They played 5-10 seconds of about 30 songs and asked for a 1-5 rating or 6 (never heard it). They also asked if they could put our name on a list for when they come to town and do local research groups (which they pay $100-$150- of course my son jumped on it)
Anyone heard of them?
by the way I had only recognized 2 out of the 30 songs!

yep thats the number on my caller id, I guess maybe they try and sell their data to radio stations.

Sounds similar to the way B98.5FM does their research when picking new currents, only the research is Internet based, and invitations are sent out to their e-mail newsletter subscribers.

They play 10 second clips of 30 songs without telling you what the title or artist is (they include songs in the current power rotation as well. I recon it is to see which one to send to lighter rotation.)

Does anyone know why they don't name titles/artists. If they did name titles/artist during research, I wonder if radio stations would be programmed better?

Nolan is working for a specific station in the market. This is callout music research in action. 80+% of all successful contemporary music stations use some version of this research to give them a weekly or bi-weekly look at what 80 to 100 of their listeners think about the current music on the station. It is a flawed but useful tool. They don't give the name of songs or artists because they're looking for the respondent's feelings about the song itself - not their perception of the band or artist.

As far as artist/title information is concerned, that's just the way Nolan does it. On the other hand, it might be the request of the radio station to not give out the artist/title information. The research company 99X (pre-Cumulus) used would send me an email link, which would use a flash page to play the sound bite and give the artist/title information.

I, actually, love the email concept. Before, they would call the house (usually at the most inappropriate times) and play the songs through the phone. If you asked for it, the operator would tell you the artist and song title. But, anybody that's heard or tried to play music through the phone sounds like crap. Plus, the way "Alternative" music has been going for the past three years+, every song sounds the same. I blame Green Day......freakin' posers.
