Nominate PULSE 87 or Energy 92.7 for the 2010 IDMA awards

http://www.wmcon.com/idmaballot/nomineesballot/

I have to say that this post was VERY tough to make.

This past year we lost two commercial terrestrial dance stations (Pulse 87(WNYZ)/New York and Energy 92.7 (KNGY)/San Francisco). Both stations had a "cult" following in terms of listener loyalty. Both stations were edgy in terms of their presentation of dance music. However, for one reason or another (Pulse/bankruptcy, Energy/new owner), both stations were off the air weeks apart from one another.

While it is by all means NO DISRESPECT to C-89.5, Super 91.7, Party FM, Vibe 94.5 or Z-88.9 (you can certainly vote for one of them if you choose), I think we need to nominate a station that is no longer with us; to send a strong "message" that dance fans are indeed VERY loyal to their "brand" of music and through the worst times, we will never forget what these stations have done for us as well as the cities influenced by such stations. If "corporate" can see this somehow, then that's what we want to have happen.

To that, when filling out the awards, please nominate either Pulse 87 or Energy 92.7...whatever station had influenced you the most, that is no longer with us.

Brett, Clint, Kris, Vic, Jon, Richard, Dave.....I do think all of you have done excellent jobs with your stations, and once again I mean absolutely NO disrespect. I just feel that we need to send out a "message" somehow, for the sake of our music, that even though the "naysayers" have pushed dance music down, with corporate giving the "thumbs down" to this brand of format based on seeing the "numbers" without looking "outside the box", that the fans have always remained loyal and supportive.

Thank you.

I don't think anyone that matters really cares. Casting a vote for a station that is no longer with us doesn't send any message that makes a difference. The people who programmed pulse and esf know they had loyal fans. I'd prefer to cast a vote for a station that is still playing dance music. I'm a west coaster so my vote will be for c89-5. Jon does a great job keeping that station alive. I'd think you'd want to show more respect for stations that continue to champion dance music, but I mean no disrespect.

I nominated Pulse 87. If it makes the final ballot, I'll vote for it. Otherwise, I'll vote for Z88.9 since I hear that most often.

That is why I had a hard time creating this post.

I DO respect what the current stations do out there. By all means I meant no offense to any of the current broadcasters pushing on with our brand of dance music as a format. The five remaining terrestrial stations do a fantastic job with dance and if it was based on those 5 stations alone, I would have a tough time deciding.

Granted, the IDMA is nowhere NEAR to the level of the Grammys, VMAs or American Music Awards. But it's still OUR awards show and it matters for us, those that are close to the dance music industry as artists, DJ's, record labels, fans, etc. I see it more as an "honor" to award either Pulse or Energy SF, as an "appreciation" for fans of those stations that even though we lost them, we still appreciate what they have done.

By all means I'm not telling people NOT to vote for C-89.5, Z 88.9, Super 91.7, PartyFM or Vibe 94.5. I do agree in that extent that if people want to give the "nod" to a current operating station, they should do so. The Pulse/Energy vote would be more on the level of "symbolic". That's the gist of the post and by all means NOT AGAINST any of the current broadcasters. I cannot emphasize that last part enough. :)

I have to agree with Mikeo on this. What message is this sending? Pulse and Energy are gone because of business issues. It happens to every genre, every format and every station in the US. It's radio. Too many people in this genre want to have a pity party. This is why genre is not at the top, instead of looking at the positives, we want sympathy. Radio stations are in the business to make money. Like Mikeo said both stations had their loyal fans. Support what you got. Lets look at the picture. You have 2 and half commercial dance stations, 3 non-coms and Sirius XM. Those are the ones you need to support now.

Besides the IDMA's are our show? Im not really sure about that. The awards are who can spam the most votes. Yeah we are asking our listeners to vote, but thats it. The whore emails have already started. Every wanna be artist and DJ's spam facebook, myspace, twitter and emails to get votes for something honestly they didnt earn. IDMA's our show? If it was our show, don't you think they would want more input or would invite people within the industry to attend? No they just want your registration fee.

Our show is now the DJ Times DJ expo in Atlantic City. I know others would agree with me that we are invited to this and become a part of the conference.

Reasons for voting for these stations:

C-89.5 - 1. oldest dance station in the US. They do an amazing job with their radiothon. 3. were featured on I believe it was ABC news. 4. High School station making the arbitron books. 5. Jon, Rich and their staff have done a great job with their students

Super 91.7 - 1. 99% volunteer. 2. for a high school station they sound great. 3. Kris and Clint have fought to keep the station alive. 4. no budget

Party FM - 1. Kept dance music going in NYC 2. They cover parts of 3 states. 3. They are the only full time commercial station still on the Mediabase chart. (if they go, so could the chart).

Agree with the first two...but party is clearly a hip hop station with some dance...If Party won it would just have people crowing on how pure dance doesn't work blah blah.. The other two as well as Your Z889 are much better choices.

Hands down, C89 should win the award this year. There are too many reasons to mention why they should, but the two main reasons are the music and programming. Hands down, C89 is better than any old dance (ish) stations that died this year and stations that are still around.

...I agree C89.5 is a great station, but don't count out VIBE 94.5. This is a full-commercial station that out of any pure-dance station in the US has a REAL chance at proving whether the format will sink or float in a big market. I think they need all the support we can give them - and although the playlist is not as deep as E98, does a fantastic job of representing our music.

Dont forget about WBDG Indianapolis and Wild 105 in Maui,,, No one ever mention's those because of their locations arent respected.

I'll have to listen to the stations that were mentioned more online (if available), but I highly doubt that they cover all sub-genres of dance that C89 does. Outside of the top 40 style dance that is played during the day, C89 also airs techno, progressive, drum/bass and House at night (and even gospel on Sunday mornings). Most of the other dance leaning station I've listened to in the states are no comparison, but like I said, I will give the stations mentioned a listen.

Thanks very much foxxman. And definate props to all other stations out there, both now and previous stations. RIP.

And Tony - no disrespect taken. I DO understand what your point is. It was a shame to lose Pulse and Energy. I think we can all agree is wasn't due to programmers who didn't know what they were doing, or the music itself. It was much, much bigger than that.

Ironically, we're actually promoting IDMA on our site - it was actually suggested by a listener. I think, if enough people out there, anywhere, are active enough and talk loud enough - eventually, people will get the message. I have a lot of thoughts about that, the format, the music and the tactics behind it, but this isn't the time, place or "forum" for it... no pun intended :)

I say just vote for what you want - but speak your mind about your love for this format, the music and the stations. A bunch of people banding together will always prove to be more powerful than any one thought/opinion alone. And to the stations: keep doing what you do.

Oh no...no disrespect at all :) I know you guys bust your butts out there to present dance music in the best way.

The second to last sentence, hey...that's why we did the coalition! :)
