Nominations for Best of 2006

What would you nominate to be the best moments in Houston radio during the past year - engineering or programming wise?

Sadly, the ONLY thing I can think of that i'd put into the category of "Best Moments of 2006" would be KLDE's reimaging to K-Hits.

Radio One's move to Praise 92.1 was a great move, but I dont know if it's worthy of "Best of 2006"

On the other hand, KRBE, KIOL and KFNC all managed to look worse...

... and Clear Channel isn't going down nor up too much... but I do admire KHMX's and KTBZ's HD2's.

Well, we can say that one of the best things to happen to Houston Radio was the addition to HD radio, but then again, there is many people who dedicate their lives at hating HD radio for a variety of reasons.

Another thing that happened was that we moved up from Market #7 to #6.
(P.S., We are now listed as #6 on the Radio Info board!)

Lets just say 2006 was a year that not much happened. (unless someone can remind me of something big that happened (besides KFNC))

Roula and Ryan's return to Houston radio on KRBE. They have destroyed their former radio station's ratings in morning drive. See ya Mix!

Ok, I gotta admit that I usually read and never post on this site, but now I feel compelled to. Tumor [EDIT], you're out of your mind. They haven't even reached the ratings of Atom and Maria. I will say that they surprisingly have done well and have not dropped as much as I thought, but they haven't yet reached the mark made by A&M. We'll know how much Houston likes them after a full year. That's how long it takes listeners to really react in diaries.

[EDIT-TOS violation]

Clearly you know nothing about ratings. They have surpassed them in virtually every demo there is. Go back to answering phones.

I should have expected unintelligent conversation from you. When you haven't been in radio you attack ones who are. They have not surpassed them in one demo. Being that I get to see the book myself, I know what they have and have not done. So when you get to see and give specific breakdowns of where they beat A&M, come back and tell the truth. And not what you think are the numbers or what you heard.

It was a good idea for a topic... too bad it went downhill so fast.

I may be biased since I work there, but I think one of the best things that happened in Radio in 2006 was the evolution of KLDE to KHITS. It took what was becoming a tired format and breathed new life into the station. Its not that I don't like the "Oldies" I do, but the station needed to be freshened up and it was.

I nominate the development of 93-Q's morning show, which I liken to 97.9 the Box's. Tim Tuttle is
Madd Hatta in a different world. Tuttle, Klein, and Jenny Law somehow click really effectively, &
I think have a good balance of fun, serious topic, & forum, plus their characters are relatable, amusing,
& well developed. The station has some opportunities, but Johnny Chiang has done an amazing job in
his situation.

That said, Im a fan & friend of Hudson & Harrigan--- who can go on forever as they have and be
completely successful. The best thing KILT can do is not let any consultants screw it up. "The new"
KILT & their on-air awareness of commercial counts are horrible ideas. They should have just gone on
being KILT, successful & great, and duck-taped the mouths of consultant idiots, and locked them in a cavern in Afghanistan.

Good luck to all the great people working in Country Radio in Houston.

I agree on the H&H Show... They're as consistant as you can be. However someone has been tinkering because we no longer get as much of Robert B. McEntire and the news. Its like he's been cut back to headline news only.. Thats too bad in my opinion, because no one can tell a news story like RB.

CONSULTANTS! What all the stations need, in addition to prayer, is some super consultant to guide them on how to compete with satellite radio and Ipods. Isn't it funny how hard it is to find "great" moments in radio in 2006. Coming up with the return of Roula & Ryan as a "best of" moment should tell you the sad site of terrestrial radio today. And it's not just Houston, it's everywhere. Probably the "best" moment in radio in 2006 is Clear Channel's exit from ownership. Don't misinterpret this post, it was best for CC. The Mays family and their group of business consultants made it crystal clear to them the future of terrestrial radio. They cashed in and will leave the sad state of their legacy to the poor fools who bought them. As for the CC employees, their new owners will no doubt continue to excersise the same financial management that results in reducing the expense side of the balance sheet at the expense of the content. Prediction for the "best" moment of 2007 will be the survival of some station or group of stations. Another sad commentary, the survival of H&H as a "best of" moment? Keyword: survival.

Ah, that's been said for 10 years.

nonono.... my nomination was for the development of the 93Q morning show.
really good post, though--- as CC's exit would be an earth-shattering great event
