Nominees for worst public radio station ever.

That's interesting stuff there. I dig it. I guess no one around here is broadcasting in mono except for the odd pirate?

When I started broadcasting in mono, I did notice a slight improvement in distance, but some radios just wouldn't stop on a mono signal when scanning. My car stereo wouldn't stop on it, and my Radio Shack digital pocket radio couldn't find it at all unless I punched the frequency in manually. Every other digital radio I had picked it up fine, but that always bothered me. So I decided to put the damn crystal back in.

I did read that mono would probably have a more noticeable impact with a micro-power of a LPFM than say a flame thrower.

My SiriusXM modulator turns the pilot tone on and off consistent with the whether the channel is mono or stereo.
No problem with any OEM Ford radio.

Secular NCE's always process the least: gr8 with full quieting signals, not so gr8 without.

WGCU apparently doesn't have a processor. They are almost impossible to listen to in my car. I have to turn the radio all the way up to hear interviews, etc. And, their afternoon host will alternate between distortion and inaudibility in her announcing. I really wish I could get Tampa or Miami NPR to replace WGCU.

On the other hand, 88.7's classical music is lightly processed with an 8500 (maybe an 8600) and sounds teriffic.

Does WMKO sound the same as WGCU or are you too far north to know ???

I can get WMKO in my car in North Naples. I'll check.

Someone cranked WGCU up a day ago. Now it sounds really bad! Very overmodulated (in excess of 120%) and very distorted. You have to wonder if anyone that works there listens to what they put on the air. It is basically unlistenable.

I've thought several times about going over there and offering my assistance, but have heard from others that they can't be bothered.

Apparently someone listened... and someone reset things. Much cleaner now! They still sound a bit overmodulated but the improvement is substantial.

I spoke too soon. Things are back to the processor-less sound. Modulation 50-60% Very hard to understand the lack of awareness at WGCU.

Well, someone finally set (sort of) the processing and it is at least audible in the car. But... today, nothing but open carrier for most of the morning. Don't they know that's illegal? Pathetic.

That's a shame they won't call someone who can fix this.

Audio is your product why wouldn't you want to present the very best product you can?

With modern DSP based processors starting at 3000.00 this is absolutely appalling.

Phil have you stopped by to see if anyone cares or was your offer via phone?

That's great! And so true.

Noticed WGCU's audio (which is now very shrill) was breaking up today, so I tried WMKO, their south Collier Co. simulcast on 91.7. It actually sounds pretty decent, especially when compared with WGCU.

I may try to call them but I'll bet they blow me off. I've emailed them in the past and what is emailed about is either ignored or corrected for a couple of days.

And, I would be happy to support them if they cared more about their on-air product.

Lo and behold, the audio sounds quite decent now! Hooray!!

Maybe they listened to you and decided it was time to do something to improve the audio. Did you make the necessary adjustments? Come on, tell us. ;)

Wish I had... But at any rate they are listenable now. At least processing-wise.

I do think they've been reading these posts.

So what did they do yesterday? Mo modulation on either station almost all day! Don't they know they either need to ID once an hour or shut them off?? Guess no one there knows FCC regulations...

They still have harsh, clipped audio. I haven't listened to their HD stream to see if its audio matches. And, it looks like Valerie Alker is gone in the afternoon, replaced by Ashley Lopez. She's decent except for her God-awful taste in fill music

Off topic but this is for HadYourPhil…

I'm going thru "stuff" and found a TV Book from the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer (GA) from I won't mention the year but it may be you on the cover if you were at WNKS-FM. You had a great morning show.
I'll be happy to mail it to you if you would like. I also ran across some South 106 bumper stickers which I might send to the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame people with the book if you can't use it.

Wow! Absolutely! My copy is very faded. And thank you for the nice words. I had a lot of fun there and worked with some great people.
