Non commercials Stations in Philly

This was in no way a slight on Michael Tearson, or Glen Kalina. They are two true pros, by all measure, and I commend them for their contribution to the curriculum at BCC and the undertaking at WBZC. I was just knocking around the power allocation parameters. It’s all in good fun. I’ve actually never seen that facility, probably one of only a few I haven’t had the opportunity to see. So I think I will take you up on your invitation, and come on down there. Besides, Hy Lit Technologies is always scouting the colleges for new young talent to participate in our intern program, and get involved with the company in a permanent capacity after graduation. I'm interested in seeing what's goin' on down there.

Then I take it back. I am always defending the non-comm educational stations because many people think we dont know what we are doing. Running a station owned by a college, always has those perceptions of its a college radio station and its a free for all. I ran one of those free for all stations while in college and it sucked. The station has made major moves to get where we are in the past three years. New transmitter and antenna, new automation equipment, hiring Glenn Kalina and just recently added a station vehicle. Shoot me an email and I can set sometime up for a visit. [email protected]

There are a few bones of contention about this and similar stations:

1) the fact that some people have made careers out of college stations, limiting the station's scope in a similar fashion as a commercial stations. The presentation is usually boring-few exceptions there.

2) Supporting the idea of Communications as a viable career option-which is the idea all the glittery, well-maintained toys support.

Funny how the people on the downward side of the parabola are meeting people (hopefully) on the way up.
They should be in Real Estate.

What does Kalina do?

Our presentation isnt based on today's commercial radio but the 80's and 90's. We push for personality on the air. That has been a tough challenge because our students are so used to what they hear now. However, there are some that are getting it and have a shot to make it in commercial radio.

There are jobs left in communications

Glenn does a lot for us. Its a part time gig because he is enjoying life right now and he loves radio. He helps train the students. Helps them with mic technique, show prep and helps me continue to make the station sound better. He is the voice of the station too. For me its a perfect situation. I have someone on staff I consider a legend in Philly radio that I grew up listening too. Glenn hosts two shows on Sunday for us. One is our County Corner at 10 am which he interviews people in our local government. Each department has come on to discuss whats going on. He also has an 80's and 90's show at a 11 am Sundays. www.Z889.org
