Was reading the article in the Memphis paper about Norm Brewer's death and saw someone posted he had worked at WMPS.

I remember him at WMC-TV when I was a kid, but never in radio. Must have been before his TV days? Can anyone shed some light on this?

And another source listed him as being with WMPS from 1954 to 1959. I know Bud Leonard and Lee Wilder were all well established news men when I came along, and Aubrey Guy was the head of Public Affairs programming at WMPS when I was there in the late 70's. I never would have pictured any of these people as wild rock and roll radio personalities (much like no one would have pictured me as once being tagged with "I Live For The Weekend"). The beards have indeed grown longer overnight.
 
There was also a story of a session in Wilkerson Sound Studio legacy, involving Norm Brewer voicing a script for the late Jan Garner, with either Skip Wilkerson or Jack Parnell engineering. Norm delivered his read perfectly in one take. After playback, as customary, Jan suggested changes for a second take looking for more animation, etc. Norm just said something to the effect of "No, I read it the way it should be read. That IS my read." And that WAS the read.
 
Rob, Thanks for the info! The CA mentioned Norm being at WMPS again today. I was too young to remember the radio days but I definitely remember Norm and the lectern newscast on WMCT-TV. By the way, if I remember correctly, somebody actually drew the weather with a marker on a board before they got the "new" magnetic precut props.

Things have really changed......
 
With MCS voting to surrender its charter yesterday, we are REALLY going to miss Mr. Brewer. This stuff would have made his head explode.

Rob, during the days of Norm, Lee & Aubrey, WMPS wasn't exactly "wild rock and roll radio." For the first few years of their top 40 format, it was more like NBC-type announcers: "Elvis Presley from the WMPS Top 40, with Heartbreak Hotel. WMPS time, 9:43. WMPS temperature, 67 degrees. In one minute, a WMPS Top 40 extra, Patti Page and Cross Over the Bridge." Too long ago for me to remember (kinda like: what I had for today's late lunch) but no recollection of whether they had a jingle out of that one minute spot, or just segged direct to the song; pretty sure they didn't do any produced 'sweepers' or 'bumpers' or whatever.
