Norm Gregory - KZOK-FM, January 1979 Aircheck

That's good stuff, Larry. Thanks! Seems like the Aquarius was funding the whole station! It's interesting hearing NG playing the character of FM album rock DJ- sounds nothing like NG the top forty guy.

Or the AC guy on KOMO. I was really surprised myself!

Want another? Here's Norm from a few months earlier, November, 1978

That's all the old Norm I got......

I really am a bit sad.

I was a Norm Gregory fan during his KJR days. Is that what he's doing now? Two old guys talking about how they're spending a Saturday? Wow. There HAS to be a better use for this her InnerTube thingie ...

I say it's whatever makes him happy. He can and should do whatever the hell he wants......

That's not to say he isn't missed, far from it. He was one of Seattle radio's coolest sounding jocks and KZOK (hell, ANY station) could definitely use that again.....

Bongwater -

You're right. I just saw it as kind of sad. The whole "I don't know - what do you want to do?" thing ... it's come down to that? Based on that, I'm unsure Norm has it in him.

Norm? Do you read this stuff? Do you think you could still do a good airshift in today's radio climate? Seriously - I'd like to hear your thoughts. Remember - I'm a fan. You were one of the very best during what I consider to be Seattle's Golden Age of CHR.

I have known Norm for twenty years and, trust me, there is nothing sad about him. And, yes, Norm could still rock the airwaves, but he is doing other things with his life now, such as spending time with his two beautiful, successful children and his nearly 1 year old granddaughter.
He is a big guy with a big voice and a big heart. I log onto his website daily because I live in CA and its a great way to check in with him. He is one of the most informed and interesting persons I know.
So Wkomm - Does it even matter if Norm "still has it in him?" I don't mean to sound hostile, but its seems presumptuous and rude on your part to call it sad. Norm is doing exactly what he wants to be doing. I found it interesting that you judged him for blogging with a friend on a Saturday, yet you have posted 77 comments to strangers on this obscure site. Is that sad?
I noticed that you asked Norm a question on this board. Did you know that you can ask him questions directly on his website?

And that's all that matters in the end, your own happiness.

The past is always a fun place to visit, but nothing will EVER be the same even if you could round up all the old school jocks, find a frequency and just let them all run wild. Kids, new bills, other commitments and not mention maybe a few old resentments, music and generally, time itself changes everything.

It's OK to fantasize and wonder "what could have been" sometimes. But in the end, I'm much happier and far more secure right now than I have ever been in my radio career and while there will always be a part of many of us former radio people that misses the chase of radio, these days all any one of us can do really is stare and comment, like at a train wreck. And then go back to the REAL world, Right now for the moment personally, I wouldn't have it any other way.....

MPSeattle: WKomm doesn't have the mental skills to take a daily dump, let alone be a part of any normal thought pattern. He's an idiot.

mp - you also seem to enjoy the company of strangers so just relax, will ya? I junp on some boards, Norm does a video blog - big deal.

I said it was kind of sad. It wasn't judgemental. One thing our online world has done is corrupt language and intent. Posters get offended or wound up about the smallest things and, as evidenced by KC, enjoy getting rude anonymously. I thought it was sad to think back on the golden years of KJR and then see Norm and his friend post a video that goes on and on about what they're doing that night. I liked Norm. I still like him. I will always be a fan.

KC - my guess is you were picked on a lot in school and boards like this are your way of getting even. So, with that in mind ...

Ouch! Ooooh! Stop! Those words hurt! Ok, ok - you're the man. I give!

WKomm

I don't want to get into it with anybody, especially with the poster who attacked you. But, if you look at my initial post again, you will see that I asked you if posting a lot of messages was sad, I didn't say it was. I asked it of you to contrast/compare your description of Norm's vidcast, as sad, against your own use of the internet.

I don't know that the online world has corrupted language and intent, but it does have us communicating with words in the absence of, and without the benefit of, tone of voice, facial expressions, etc. As a result,a word such as "sad" can sound stonger than the writer intended. We can't hear how you say it and read your expression as you do, so it can seem harsh, for those reasons. Iam sure you didn't mean to be offensive.
I liked watching Norm and Larry figure out their day. And that has nothing to do with age! I have had those conversations since the day I had some autonomy. And they continue to this day.

Check out his website, which by the way has been voted one of the best Seattle sites, because his vidcasts include updates on current events, interesting news, food for thought, and the site itself has lots of interesting links....Plus you get to hear Norm mispronounce Spanish words (except for "muchachos")
And WKomm, you are his fan, so why not contact him on his website? I am sure he would love to hear from you.

mpseattle - Thanks for being reasonable and non-hostile when it's not needed.

By "sad" I didn't mean to be pitied. I meant sad as in how much time has passed and changed ALL of us and how much radio has changed. I thought KJR was, at one point, among the very best stations in America and the jousting between KJR, KING and KOL was legendary. Norm Gregory was a physically big guy and had a bigger presence in Seattle radio than most guys who ever walked into a control room.

As I said - I'm a fan. Instead of "sad" maybe I'm just a little down. But I'm pleased to hear from those who know him that he's happy and doing well. And I'll ck his website further. I want to know if he & his buddy ever decided on smething to do together :)

Hey WKomm,

Is hostility ever appropriate?

I know what it is like to be misunderstood. Your comment did seem to come from pity, however, it is clear that you did not mean it to be so.

Look: You describe Norm as: Was a physically big guy/with a bigger presence than most.

Norm continues to inhabit the world with his 6' 6" presence. And he continues to add his resounding voice on

his website, normgregory.com. Check it out.

Wkomm: I did not not mean to be agressive with you and there for I'm sorry. I believe differing opinions are part of our lives and welcome them, and yours.

Sorry.

Wow. I'm impressed.

The ultimate civility here as demonstrated by this thread. is a rare commodity in cyberspace. Kudos to the (non)combatants!

I actually am okay with online spats ... as long as they don't get too personal. Because we can choose to be anonymous, that usually does not happen. Even when it does get a tad too nasty, all I ask is that a poster attack with intelligence and wit - again, that usually does not happen.

Like ronrob, I am also impressed. I truly meant no put down of Norm Gregory. He's one of the shining lights in my memory when I was just starting in radio - and I'm not that much younger than him :) and I'm just pleased to see him active and healthy.

It's all good and everything's cool.

Now let's all pop the top of a nice cold frosty one and give Norm a virtual cheers!

For making incredibly cool radio. With style to spare.......

CHEERS!

Hey Norm - If you visit this board, allow me to wish you the very best Thanksgiving. I will always remember you on KJR. Don't get any gravy on your headphones ...
