Usually when I'm drinking my Carolan's n'coffee i'm watching WCSH's morning news, but I must have left Channel 8 on last night because when I awoke, i noticed Norm Karkos doing news. And doing a darned fine job!

Is this permanent? Who's going to do sports at 6pm on WMTW now?

I raise my glass to you, Norm!

Norm announced his switching over to news, a la Steve Minnich a few years ago. last week. I think the other bald, dumpy guy (Travis?) is taking over sports.

i'll 2nd the toast, sir. Norm is a very nice guy - easy going and not, from what i've seen, easily flustered. he and i have shared ten too many bowls of chili or chowder (as "judges") at the annual challenge.

Oh god, spare us. Travis is awful. Why put one of the best sports guys in town in a non-sports position on a loser AM show? Ch 6 outpaces both, and at least WGME tries.

I definitely agree with the others about Norm. He's a pro...and perhaps will add a little credibility to the CHANNEL 8 NEWS TEAM!

Have you noticed that as hard as Channel 13 tries to get "the scoop" over the competition that most of their anchors are starting to sound like Mary Hart from ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT? I wonder if any viewer actually cares when it comes to which television station got the scoop on a breaking news story first? ???

To make constant references that "our station" was the only one where a viewer could see a particular interview or news about a previous murder is kind of like saying..."my football is better than your football!" It's pretty damn childish. :-[

Do you honestly think viewers CARE when an anchor tells him (or her) that you could only see this story on his or her station? Isn't getting the correct information out to the public more important---than staggering a story till 6pm or 11pm? In other words..."WHO REALLY GIVES A S**T" about all the teasing?" I certainly don't!

Regardless of whether you work for 6, 8, 13 or FOX 23...report the stories and leave this sort of nonsense to "Entertainment Tonight"---where you'll always find more "teasing about the stories" than ACTUAL CONTENT! :p

This may come as a surprise to you, Argy, but teasing IMPROVES RATINGS. Bottom line. People who work full-time in media know that.

Underminer...

A little teasing is fine.....but when every 3rd NEWS story ends with a "coming up within the next half hour" or "coming up at 6"---that's OVERKILL! Most of the follow-up information adds nothing to the original story.

If you counted the number of "teases" in an average WGME-TV newscast (during December and throughout January) like I did...I think you'd find that the "coming up concept" gets very tired--very quickly! ::)

Just because a newsdirector force feeds a viewer "a lot of teases"---doesn't make the newscasts or the story content any better?

I'm surprised a "full-time working broadcaster" like yourself isn't aware of this fact already?

Again Argy, please stop highjacking threads so you can make obvious points that don't bear repeating, or jibbering about these supposed ideas you have that you won't share because someone else will steal them. Nobody cares. If they did, you wouldn't be semi-employed by JJ. You'd be in a position to inflict them on somebody that gets paid to implement them.

Underminer...

I guess your opinion(s) are the only ones that mean anything? ???

If you go back to the beginning of this thread...there was an earlier reference to Channel 13 newscasts by ThreeFer. I just took his comment a little further.

As I've indicated in earlier threads...it often takes "an outsider" who isn't being paid to KISS UP to an employer to make his or her point on these boards. This doesn't mean anybody has to agree with them.

But instead...you get paranoid about hijacking a thread!.

Maybe the difference between us is that I can freely express an opinion while you appear to be doing a lot of 'kissing up' to somebody? :-*

And as everybody in this market already knows (whether they happen to be fully employed, semi-employed, or were connected with broadcasting at one time or another)....there's a very fine line between "offering a suggestion" for a commercial or a promotion...and taking full credit for a concept that wasn't yours to begin with! :-[

Ch 8 is looking for a sports director/weeknight sports anchor, check their job postings.

And the WMTW merry-go-round continues!

Argy, I hope you get the job. Then you'll have to kiss up to Hearst Argyle and you can then no longer post here.

Three-Fer...

I'm very sorry my comments 'rubbed you' the wrong way! :'(

I always was under the impression that open forums (such as this) were designed to express an opinion and perhaps express a different point of view? ???

As I indicated earlier...you...nor anybody else...has to agree with me!

But thanks for bringing the sports position to my attention. I know several broadcasters (in and out of this market) who would probably be a better fit than I would? However....in the event that Channel 8 (or any TV station in the area) should ever need the services of an off-camera voiceover announcer...I'll be more than happy to submit my demo. :)

argytunes (who at last count performs more than 40 different voices---in addition to his own) ;)
