Norm Schrutt profile in the AJC

Rodney Ho just got the radio scoop of the year - Andrew Saltzman is now the GM of 680 The Fan. Well done Rodney!

Rodney, normally I wouldn't give you a hard time but man that is a bad one.

What's next....

Referring to Scott Slade as WGST morning host.

Jimmy Baron, Steve Barnes former co-host and best friend.

Neil Millman, 92.9 Radio Atlanta PD.

Where does it stop?

I worked for Norm twice between 1985 and 1995 (or so), first doing overnights on Kicks/WPLO to later being the morning show producer for Moby, and then Rhubarb. Norm could very loud and arrogant, and hard to take at first, but later I realized that he just needs to be large and in-charge, and if you just go along with that he was pretty easy to get along with. The man knows Radio, he made a great living at it then retired and moved on. I learned alot working for him, and have much respect for the man. That being said... Norm I am now a three time Gabby Award winning morning show host in need of an agent...so call me!

His famous line, "Im not taking on any new clients" is bs... when someone with talent comes calling, Norm is willing.
Needless to say, he told me twice he's not taking on new clients. Ha...

Dave Marino once told me a funny story about Norm. It goes something like this:

Dave did not know Norm, his history or anything about him, but heard he was an agent, so he called Norm and asked if he could send him a tape. He did, and Norm called him the next day and said he liked his stuff, and for an upfront fee of $**** he'd take him on.

To which Dave asked (remember Dave didn't know Norm) "Gee, Norm you wouldn't happen to be of the Jewish persuasion would ya?"

You can imagine Norm's response.

Mazel Tov, Norm!

Norm had so many catch phrases and funny stories, but when he ran Kicks he new how to put the station first and the results were clearly evident. Now according to my very expensive watch its time to go

I agree, somewhat, with you "ifyouthink", and not to take anything away from Schrutt,
but you have to remember that Kicks was the only game in town back in it's infancy. Back in the day of Jim Wilder and WBIE that station was run like a small market - $5 spots - they were non-aggressive in programming and in sales but if you'll look at those ratings (prior to CapCities taking control) they were pulling some numbers that many stations would be proud to have today.

As someone stated earlier when Y-106 came on board with Rhubarb, they did some serious butt-kicking for a few books. Of the two, Y had to be the better man and I don't remember Schrutt doing anything outstanding to change the facts.....he did hire Moby later and that stabilized the ship....like he always did, threw money at the problem. When you've got deep pockets, you can rule and as Mel Brooks (and Schrutt on a few ocassions) said: "It's good to be the king"!

If you think its funny, and I don't think it's funny, then it's not funny!!!! :D

I remember one of his lines...."I could fire you this afternoon and go to dinner with you tonight"!

I think one of the best lines was by Vern Ore just after his arrival at Kicks. It happened just after he caught a glimpse of the great unwashed - a family of listeners dropping by to claim their prizes. Ore's quip: "Just further proof that the early settlers WERE f##king the buffaloes"!

Norm is the best! They all revered Norm when I worked for ABC in Washington. My only regret is that I never got to work with this radio genius! They don't come any better than Norm. And I don't even know the guy. But I respect him.

Check with his ex wife Linda. She probably makes it her business to know his every move, especially when the monthly check is late!

I had the distnict pleasure of being canned by Norm.....
Love ya dude!!! I'm in the head cheese seat for CC Radio in SWF..
Hey Mr. Schrutt...no hard feelings.....I woulda canned my ass too!!
You're an ICON in the biz...we love ya!! 8) 8) 8) 8) :p :p :p

Norm Schrutt - the things he said.

one DJ was complaininag about working on christmas day. and with a smile on his face said,

"but norm i need to have that day off to celebrate the birth of my lord and savior."

without blinking, norm replied, "FINE, you can have a day off on march 16th" ;D

(i think it was march 16th)

the puzzled DJ looked at norm for a moment... :-\

then norm continued..."thats my birthday, and around here I AM YOUR LORD AND SAVIOR."

we laughed, went lunch in norms rolls...and...worked christmas.
