If you read the Pittsfield, MA Berkshire Eagle on-line, you'll see a story in Friday's edition about a WNAW - North Adams, reporter, Edward "Ted" Bassani, getting fired by Vox Communications officials. Here is a link to the story. http://www.berkshireeagle.com/headlines/ci_3204371 Aparently, this whole incident happened because of an incident with the mayor of North Adams.
http://www.berkshireeagle.com/fastsearch/ci_3177242 This guy actually got 3 articles in the local paper. (3) http://www.berkshireeagle.com/fastsearch/ci_3200418 Anyone in Western Massachusetts have any more "inside" stuff on this?

the following is a statement of personal opinion:
As a lifelong Berkshire county resident, it appears that
John Barrett OWNS the mayor's office of North Adams &
likewise, voxradiogroup OWNS Berkshire County Airwaves.
The mayor was instrumental in the rehiring of veteran
weathercaster George Trottier. So, therefore, no doubt,
the mayor probably sent down an official edict of some
sort calling for his dismissal. He was even kept from
commenting on his situation during a public comment
period @ the town's clowncil meeting.

I will watch this one closely!!!
______________

BY the response I see, if it doesn't fall in the almighty Albany radio market, its not that important. Betcha some people in the Albany market don't know where North Adams is in the first place. If this happened to a WGY reporter, the list of responses would take up an entire page.

I noticed that the articles refer to this guy as the host of the opinion show, not as a news reporter for the station. He clearly has a history with this mayor. He wasn't kept from commenting on the situation either. Read the articles carefully. It's mentioned in the articles that he was asked not to discuss anything that involved the pending charges/litigation. That's not an unreasonable request. It's quite common actually. So, what was the reason Vox gave for his dismissal? Is he suing Vox in addition to what sounds like a totally bogus criminal complaint against the mayor? It almost sounds like he was trying to bait the mayor into a physical confrontation. There seems to be much more to this than what we're hearing.

North Adams,MA is where, again??? I live in Albany! There are stations elsewhere?!

OutStanding Observation Mr. A.F.
It is all a matter of perception!
WNAW is a Daytimer that services the listening area
north of Pittsfield,ma/south of Pownal,vt
east of Petersburg,ny/west of Clarksburg,ma

Owned by voxradiogroup/out of clairmont, new hampshire.

With studios & offices on the Curran Highway in North Adams

In town(north adams)it is a clear signal.
Not too far out of town is it clearly audible, though!

Sad state of affairs
when the most listened to
radio stations for berkshire county
aren't even county based stations.

We are in a unique area with
2 owners of 9 stations in 1 county.
vox is clearchannelesque in the berkshires
& hodgkins is like regent or galaxy, 2nd place.

I pray each day that it will change but to no avail!

short of ted coming on this board
& defending himself, we can only speculate!
Vox cannot afford any more bad press! they fired a
blind weather caster & the mayor demanded he be rehired!
Fill in the blanks here for ted. The town clouncil spins
their reasons behind ted not being allowed to speak. vox
should be sued & i think you will find a mayoral edict
for a basis of his demise. Physical assault is what it is!
Irregardless of who does it or when where or why! Mayor or not!

Ted Bassani was the morning anchor on WNAW (and their only newsguy)and did a lot of investigative reporting. From what I've heard, he had a lot of issues with management of Vox after they turned their afternoon newsman into a DJ at WSBS...leaving WNAW without an afternoon newsman/reporter. Since Bassani left, the quality of WNAW news has no doubt sunk to new lows. North Adams FM WMNB gets their news out of WUPE in Pittsfield with some good stuff on that statiion.

211 JASON STREET PITTSFIELD is where
the new whoopee fm simulcasts from!

Their afternoon news man was the GM for WSBS 860
pre-voxradiogroup. He has to be nearly the hardest
worked man in the county. He is former WBEC am/fm
GM & OM & traffic coordinator DAVE WINCHESTER.
They don't hire new @ vox, they use what is there.

Ah, the price of big radio in the berkshires.
______________

Kratka was on WBEC-AM back in 1985 as a jock...so he's been in Berkshire County radio for 20 years...maybe more, most of it in news. Joanne Billow was on WBEC-FM when I graduated from high school in Lee in 1985 and I think she was on WBEC AM for a while too. I know for a fact that Tom Jay at WSBS is the longest running news guy on the air in the Berkshires. He and Nick Diller celebrated 30 years together about 8 or 9 years ago. Diller retired but Tom is still there. Got to be 39 years. Amazing. I think Eric Green first appeared on WBEC in the late 80's...when I wanted a job there. He got it. I don't know anything about the WBRK gang but they're racking up the years too. Someone should write an article on this bunch of long-time jocks and newscasters. It would make for interesting reading by anyone. Radio history in the making.

I'm not familier with the gazette. I remember the Eagle. Still crappy as ever? Small down daily. Most one-sided newspaper I ever read. To answer your question, longevity is a matter of luck and talent. Ratings play a big part in longevity in the larger markets but probably not markets the size of Pittsfield. In such markets, you do your job...keep your nose clean and you'll last forever if you want. Jocks on-the-way-up use markets like Pittsfield as a stepping stone to bigger and better things. Most PD's like to see 2 years or more at individual stations on a resume. Someone like the "legends" of Berkshire radio probably stayed as long due to personal reasons...got married there...had kids...wife has a better paying job then the jock, likes the community, doesn't want to put up with the BS in larger markets. A million reasons why they stay but when they do, they have multi-generations of people who hear them, know them...love them or hate them. But you have to respect them for what they're doing in their own way.

All most of the above posts are is uninformed opinion by Mr. Wright...who hates Vox...because they won't hire him. As editorials in a couple of newspapers said last week...Ted put himself out of the role of reporter and into the role of the story. How could he continue to be an objective newsman covering the local town news in North Adams when he was suing the town? He also was a person the station received numerous complaints about from listeners over the past 7 months. His co-workers in the building were also not fond of him or the working environment he created. Vox has already hired a former WNAW newsperson to come back on board and he is doing an excellent job without all the theatrics of Mr. Bassani. The newspersons job is to cover the news...not become the news. And I hardly think Vox doesn't care about news when they maintain a 5 person news department in Berkshire County. Tell me of one other group of stations this size that has that? Uh...right.....NONE! Mr. Wright...try getting a radio job and quit your personal vendetta. It's getting old.

THIS ABOVE MAY VERY WELL BE TRUE!
I WILL NOT DEBATE OF WHAT I DO NOT KNOW!

DO YOU REMEMBER THE TONY CARNEVALE/
MAYOR ANNE EVEREST WOJTKOWSKI
ON-AIR BATTLE THAT FORCED THE NEWSMAN
THERE TO RESIGN HIS POST?
NO! I DIDN'T THINK SO!
I WAS @ WBRK & WORKED WITH THE MAYOR'S
HUSBAND DURING THAT DEBACLE. TALK ABOUT UNEASY AIR!

BUT, I DIGRESS, GETTING BACK TO YOUR ATTACK ON ME;
And I hardly think Vox doesn't care about news when
they maintain a 5 person news department in Berkshire County.
vox DOES APPEAR TO CARE! THEY HARDLY HAVE ANY COMPETITON
WITH LEN BEAN & DAN VALENTI @ WBRK THE ONLY OTHER OPTION!

THE BERKSHIRE NEWS NETWORK IS A VIABLE STORY-SHARING GROUP!

Tell me of one other group of stations this size that has that?
THAT IS EASY! OF COURSE IT WOULD BE CLEAR CHANNEL ALBANY=>WGY!
Uh...right.....NONE! YOU ARE WRONG! WGY!

WHEN THE TERMINATION OF A NEAR VOLUNTEER WEATHER CASTER CAUSES
SALES CLIENTS TO START PULLING ACCOUNTS, STATIONS TAKE NOTICE, TOO!
"MAYOR" BARRETT ASSISTED IN THE FORTUNATE REENSTATEMENT OF
GEORGE TROTTIER TO THE WNAW AIRWAVES! HIS BROTHER IS MY FRIEND!
Mr. Wright...try getting a radio job and quit your personal

THANK YOU FOR CALLING MR. WRIGHT! & I NO LONGER HAVE ANY VENDETTA!

AS SOMEONE WITH THE FACTS,
YOUR OPINIONS OF ME STAY SUCH, OPINIONS!

Mr. Wright...your radio knowledge is very limited as your prove time and time again. WGY is in market #60. The Berkshires isn't even rated...hardly a comparable situation.

No clients cancelled. The station realized it had made a mistake and made it good. many people gave their opinion...not just the mayor.

Your words above are true? Ha. Highly unlikely, Mr. Wright.

Re: Uncalled for attackS on my character by an uniformed poster.

Mr. Wright...your radio knowledge is very limited as your

WHEN DID THIS BECOME A COMPETITION OF LEVELS OF KNOWLEDGE!?

MY LEVEL OF RADIO KNOWLEDGE IS RATHER HIGH,
EVEN AFTER GRADUATING TOP OF CLASS @ NSRT
& WORKING WITH MOST ALL OF THE "LEGENDS"
OF BERKSHIRE COUNTY AIRWAVES!

DO YOU REMEMBER:
GEORGE CHURCH III & TOM REILLY @ WBRK?
C.J. PREISSER & DON CLARK @ WBEC?
JOE MINDLAND & THOM HARRISON @ WUPE?

WGY is in market #60.
The Berkshires isn't even rated
...hardly a comparable situation.

TRUE, BUT NOT A SPECIFIED FACTOR IN THE ORIGINAL POST!
SO, MY COMPARISON IS STILL CORRECT!

WHEN THE TERMINATION OF A NEAR VOLUNTEER WEATHER CASTER CAUSES SALES CLIENTS TO START PULLING ACCOUNTS, "MAYOR" BARRETT ASSISTED IN THE FORTUNATE REENSTATEMENT OF GEORGE TROTTIER TO THE WNAW AIRWAVES! TROTTIER'S BROTHER IS MY FRIEND!

No clients cancelled. The station realized it had made a mistake and made it good. many people gave their opinion...not just the mayor.

NICE SPIN!

I WANT TO KNOW WHICH vox
STATION DO YOU WORK FOR!?!

YOUR SPIN IS BEGINNING TO MAKE ME THINK
YOU ARE IN THEIR EMPLOY!

SHORT OF BEING AN ACTUAL vox EMPLOYEE,
THE ABOVE REMAINS TRUE!

Your words above are true?
Ha. Highly unlikely, Mr. Wright!

UNLIKELY TO WHOM BESIDES YOURSELF?!

YOU SEEM TO WANT TO TURN THIS INTO A PERSONAL ATTACK!
THE REASONS FOR WHICH I AM UNKNOWING OF!
PLEASE KEEP THESE POSTINGS ABOVE PERSONAL LEVELS!

I SEE YOU CHOOSE TO EDIT YOUR
COMMENTED PORTIONS OF MY POSTS AS WELL!

HOW CONVENIENT!
______________

Hey folks, how about sticking to the subject at hand instead of personal attacks. I don't think thats what this board is for. Meet in a parking lot of a Vox station at high noon and duke it out with 45's, lp's, old carts or the 21st century weapon of choice, the hard drive. No bulk erasers allowed.

Than-q PoPeYe!
There are some who cruise this board
who would rather I was off of it t.f.n.!

I apologize to any & all of you if my comments were below boards.

I know things get heated here when it
comes to small market radio like Berkshire/Mass.

voxradiogroup is the big fish in our small pond.

I understand that the certificate I hold from NSRT
looks good in a frame & what I learned may someday
be put to good use in the broadcasting field.

Until then, I will continue to work my day job
& await the opportunity to re-enter the field of radio.

I mean or have meant no ill will to anyone with my postings.

I only ask for equal opportunity to exchange ideas using this forum.

Thank You!
Chuck D. Wright

p.s.
I have used all of the above
mentioned during my career in radio!
But you forgot reel to reel tapes!
______________
