North Carolina public television network adds 12th station

That region is known to be a very mountainous area. With that said, the channel obviously has the distinction of being the first one in the network to sign on in the post-analog era.

Talk about pointless. Isn't the Asheville station nearby?
The source irony is what's keeping me from being able to triangulate the locations for you. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I make it a point never to go to web sites outside a select group if I'm at home.

It is. WUNF-TV 25 (virtual 33) broadcasts from the WLOS-TV tower atop Mount Pisgah. I'm wondering if the new station is due to terrain issues. Channel 27 in Canton used to be a translator for WUNF in the analog days.

According to RabbitEars.info coverage maps with Longley-Rice overlay, although areas to the west of Mt. Pisgah fall within the predicted coverage contour, actual coverage is minimal; Canton itself is covered, but Waynesville is not. WUNW provides missing coverage to Waynesville and duplicates coverage in Canton and parts of the Asheville area, but covers little else.

See, that's what you use a translator for. You don't put a full-power station on the air for this purpose. And what about all those people in places like Sylva, Franklin, Murphy, etc. What do THEY do?

Why not? It gets them must carry of UNC-KD in that market.

They have translators.

And it preserves their use of channel 27. If someone else had come along and applied for the channel for a full-power station, they ran the risk of losing the translator that was operating there.
