Hello and welcome to the board!

Thanks for sharing your catches on video. The video quality and production is awesome.

I'm in Tampa and I've never had an HD radio but I'm considering maybe getting one.

Thank you, gar fla! I was originally from the other side of the Bay from you. :) I did bring my HD Radio down to Indian Rocks Beach and did an FM bandscan at night. (Video of the bandscan will be up soon!!!) When I did a bandscan of the stations in the Tampa Bay area, it appears some of the IBOC/HD Radio stations "turn off" their IBOC/HD Radio signals during the nighttime, but don't count me on this...(unfortunately, I did not record an actual bandscan during the daytime, only during the nighttime)...

Maybe next time when I'm in the area. :)

I'd like to also add that a couple of Jax stations, Cox-owned WJGL ("96.9 The Eagle") and WXXJ ("X1029: Jacksonville's New Rock Alternative") are clones of Tampa's (also Cox-owned) WXGL ("107.3 The Eagle") and WSUN ("97X: Tampa Bay's New Rock Alternative").

One thing you may want to try is DXing at the Gulf here during the day with a standard analog AM radio.

There's a place called Honeymoon Island state park in Dunedin and it's a little isolated barrier island.

You can hear stations there that can't be heard just a little ways inland. The dial lights up with stations from the panhandle to the Texas coast.

My most distant daytime catch is from Houston.

The east coast of our state will give you some great daytime reception as well.

About 4 or 5 years ago, I used the AM tuner of a 1980's Sony Walkman and tuned to San Antonio, TX's WOAI-AM 1200 kHz from IRB!!! At the time, the Spurs game was on... :D

WOAI is a strong regular here at night.

Speaking of the Sony Walkman, when I first came down here from Jersey 26 years ago, I had a Sony AM Stereo walkman. AM stereo was the thing on AM back then and I was fascinated with it.

Down here at night, I liked to listen to the old 66 WNBC and WLS in stereo when they played top 40. I think AM stereo was a better thing for AM than HD. I don't see why an HD sound is needed to hear talk radio and the IBOC noise has really had an impact on DXing.

I wish I held on to my AM stereo receiver because those things are collector's items now.

I agree with you: IBOC/HD Radio on AM is a nightmare, especially when DXing.

Example:

On another note, when I was in the Tampa Bay area, I heard Justin Bieber's "Baby" and the 'Kidz Bop' version of Katy Perry's "California Gurls" (I think) on WWMI-AM 1380 kHz...in "HD"...(I cringed and shuddered at the sight...LOL...) :-\

I also heard WDAE-AM, WFLA-AM, and WHNZ-AM in "HD"...

I looked at that Youtube video and I agree with it, the HD on AM is cr@p. But at the end it said it works on FM, but maybe yes at where that video is located, but around here, I kind of disagree with what because of adjacent channel interference.

Where is "here"? :D

Back in 1979, I remember being in Harrisonburg, Virginia when my parents were taking me to look at colleges and I could hear KYW late in the morning with a steady weak signal but just good enough to ID.

I was really surprised by that one.

It was on my old Panasonic portable AM/FM radio I got for Christmas in 1976.

That's a surprise to me considering that I could hardly hear KYW in the middle of the day to this date and the R-L map shows it's directional toward NW and SE. Must have been a skywave reception in Harrisonburg. I did heard KDKA in Pittsburgh in late morning just south of Lynchburg, VA last month, with a car radio. (Lynchburg is well south of Harrisonburg)

The strange thing is, the signal was steady and didn't vary for the long time I listened.

Their pattern favors the SSE and NNW with the only null being in the direction of New York. Harrisonburg certainly isn't in their favored directions.

I'm now wondering if the positioning of the mountains or the land between there and Philadelphia could have had something to do with it?

Back in the mid 70s, I remember hearing WFIL up near State College, Pa late morning with a steady fairly good signal too in a specific location and that was a surprise too. I know that's in their general directional pattern but the signal sounded almost as good as it did down at the shore.

The exact location I remember hearing it was a little ways away from town as a relatively high elevation compared to the surrounding area where we got out of the car to get a nice view.

I know height isn't supposed to improve AM reception but maybe other factors concerning the land could have been involved? I recall not being able to hear WFIL that strong at all back at my brother's place in town. I don't know what to make of either of the two catches.
