North Fla. station burglarized..

..not once, but three times over three nights!

Unattended daytimer WCVC/Tallahassee was apparently broken into this past Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. Various pieces of equipment were stolen over the first two break-ins, then Saturday night the satellite receiver was stolen, resulting in two days of silence before a local manager could piece an emergency studio back together in the transmitter building.

I don't work for this station, but got called Monday for some help. It was pretty much trashed. I recommended getting everything of value out of the studio building, which has now been done. Police reports were filed and they did find some evidence.

I hate to see this happen to any station, so please make sure your station is secure.
______________

The last station I worked at had a non-working 12 gauge shotgun, a pellet gun, and an axe under the mixer desk for the night people to scare off drunken rednecks (the locks were crappy at best). I never had to use them, but they made for great practical joke props!

Not to endorse burglary or criminality, but...

> Unattended daytimer WCVC/Tallahassee

It's hard to get worked up about a station that relays an out-of-town satellite service (in this case, the Catholic Relevant Radio network) and has no local presence. It's too tempting to say that this is the price you pay for having no one around to mind the store.

Some years ago, Tallahassee was identified as the market with the lowest AM listenership in the country. Sad when you think back and remember that the old WANM had double-digit shares well into the 1980s. AM radio does a particularly poor job serving this market, and it in no way reflects the makeup of the city -- a college town with a substantial African-American population and a large government workforce.

Tallahassee AM radio should look like a cross between Madison WI, and Atlanta,
with a progressive talker, an African-American talker, and maybe a "Spike 1140" (Las Vegas) style hot talker, not a bunch of preacher stations.

It's a terrible thing to think, but maybe if all the two-bit Tallahassee AM stations were as relentlessly attacked by criminals as this one apparently has been, they'd go dark and get sold to people who actually have a clue rather than an agenda. In 1330's case, it worked for a couple of days. ;-)

I can't believe I'm writing this...

sometimes all the security in the world just doesn't matter to some people:

we had someone actually kick in and jump through not 1 but 2 windows of the rock station next door to my studio - while they were on the air during their night show!!! (our studios were in an old furniture building in the display windows on the front - nothing like being in a fishbowl!) this angry-and-on-crystal-meth guy drove to our building, parked in front of the rock studio; kicked in 1 of the 12' x 8' panes of glass and then jumped through the inner "sound barrier" window into the studio landing right on the board. the guy that was doing the rock show called the cops, but in the 2 minutes it took them to get there, all hell broke loose. craziest thing i have ever seen...while on the air and in the studio.
______________
