North Platte, Nebraska Nighttime Bandscan Highlights

I spent last night in North Platte, Nebraska. West-central part of the state. Roughly 250 miles west of Omaha and 250 miles northeast of Denver. SRF 37 Walkman. Hotel had a moderate noise level (which, for the most part, I was able to null).

540: CBK....fair at best. Weaker than I expected.
590: KXSP....weak, but on top
640: Trying for KFI. I heard some very faint talk, but couldn't identify
650: WSM...very weak
670: WSCR...fair. I heard unidentifiable stuff underneath. Not sure if Cuba, KBOI, or something else.
680: KNBR...very weak
700: WLW...weak
720: WGN....fair/good
740: CFZM...weak (this was the farthest east, and surprised me a little because WJR was absent)
780: WBBM...good
820: WBAP...weak
830: WCCO...fair
840: WHAS...fair/good. A mild surprise
850: KOA...good. The surprise for me here was that this was the only nighttime Denver signal I heard except KEZW
860: CJBC...weak, but audible. CFZM (from the same stick) was doing much better
870: WWL...weak under KRVN splatter
880: KRVN...blasting less than 50 miles west of their stick
890: WLS...fair/good under KRVN splatter
940: KPSZ...fair with 5kw pretty much aimed right at me (from Des Moines)
960: CFAC...fair
990: CBW...fair
1000: KTOK...good
1040: WHO...fair
1070: KNX..weak but audible mixing with other weak signals
1080: KRLD...fair
1090: KAAY...good. Another mild surprise
1100: WTAM...weak/fair
1110: KFAB...fair (convergence zone)
1120: KMOX...good
1130: Looking for CKWX. Nothing doing. Nothing identifiable
1160: KSL...good
1170: KFAQ...fair/good
1200: WOAI...fair
1210: Country music. KGYN?
1430: KEZW...fair/good. I didn't spend much time on the "regionals", but I caught an ID when I was "passing through"
1500: KSTP...weak
1520: KOKC...very weak. Surprising because this are used to be right in KOMA's nighttime "sweet spot"
1540: KXEL...good

Tonight and Tomorrow I'm in downtown Denver. Noise level in this hotel is very high, so I'm not expecting any DX opportunities. Although, that said, I'm on the 18th floor (of 20) and a few of the locals are strong enough to smash through.

Country on 1210. One of the Wyoming stations runs the same satellite fed service as KGYN. I get a slight echo in Boise. The Wyoming station seems to miss most of the liners so I hear only the ones from KGYN.

KRSV Afton, WY is likely the sat-fed that misses IDs. I get country on 1210 really often now - and more often than not it's "Star Country KRSV 1210 AM and 98.7 FM" - I sometimes get "Buckin' 92" which is KHAT Laramie (ex-ESPN), and I've NEVER caught Guymon OK yet. May have the other night, the one fading up weakly with Monday Night Football...

I'm getting my box loop BACK after a few months - so maybe I can pull off KGYN with the 3 foot loop. That's one of my most wanted and would be OK #3 (next to KOKC and KFAQ)

The mystery deepens concerning what I heard on 1210. I would think that KRSV would be throwing quite a null at Nebraska...not that KGYN would be throwing a lot of signal that way, either. There was no echo, so presumably it would have been one or the other. Bottom line is whatever....it was a fun evening.

And I forgot to mention, I had CBC on 1010....which I would assume was Alberta. Offhand I'm not sure if I remember the call correctly (CBR? Calgary?).

Finally, glad to hear you're getting the box loop back. I' a little surprised you haven't snagged KOKC yet....but then again, I've never heard it when I've been in your area. KFAQ, however, doesn't surprise me. I've never heard it on the west coast, and I'd think KPUG would be a major pest not helping matters.

CBC 1010 Calgary's calls are CBR. I remember they would occasionally pop in in south east Iowa. Condtions were not great last night accorind to the WWV solar report. That would have really hurt reception from some stations that should have been a lot better than they were.

KOKC & KFAQ make it out to Hawaii. I heard them both on the rental car radio 4 years ago when I was out there. KOKC especially well.

Report might have been bad but conditions seemed real good around 6AM - 1053 Korean Jammer, 972 HLCA in South Korea, 540 CBK in SK really strong. Also heard weak 1566 HLAZ (early morning TP prop)

Have logged KGYN here in the Chicago area a few times in the past and was really pleased to get them!

I've heard KGYN at home in the Chicago area a couple of times. Same goes for KFAQ. But I've never heard CBR. CFRB is the most likely to rise out of the slop on 1010, but occasionally it's WINS. Where I live, 40 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, local WMVP (1000) is easy to null.

I've never logged KGYN in Cincinnati. I've got a daytimer in Dayton to the north and WPHT to my back, so maybe the power increase for KGYN will help.

Are you in the Sheraton? That's were we stayed for a couple of nights when we were in Denver last month. Could hardly get any Denver stations, let alone any DX.
